I compiled the bulk of this mix during the same sessions as Ep.1. Originally the first third was heavy on Minimal and Electronica. It felt very much like the episode prior. So, I searched for an intro to set it apart. I stumbled upon Hyaku a few weekends ago, it’s a track from early last year I somehow missed. This tune really struck me, I reconfigured the entire first third of the mix to help it meld into a mix exploring deep vibes across a variety of genres.

The vocalist on the first track was immediately recognizable, being none other than the esteemed Roberta Flack. The song sampled is ‘Tryin’ Times’ and appears on her excellent 1969 debut album ‘The First Take’. I encourage listeners to seek out the original. As much as I love this deep take here with Hyaku, the producers have omitted (whether intentionally or not) key lyrics that remove the balance of the original song, and the result is a set of vocals that could come across as - perhaps - a bit pessimistic.

Tryin’ Times is really a song about facing the challenges of strife and dividing lines, with fellowship and community. Perhaps I’m projecting, but I can hear Roberta’s intention flow through this deep house version as well. Roberta Flack passed away, surrounded by family and friends, at the age of 88 on February 24 2025. RIP
