INVENTION - strickly speaking - is nothing more than the combination of new things and images that has been previously gathered and depsoited in the mind - for NOTHING can come from NOTHING :

He who borrows an idea from an ancient or modern artist - now his contemporary and so accommodates it into his own work - that it makes a part of - but not seem to joining or appearing - can hardly be charge with plagiarism. Other poets and musicians practice this kind of borrowing without reserve ;

But an Artist should not contend with this only - He should enter a competition with the original and endeavor to improve what he is appropriating into his own work ; Such invention is so far from having anything other than the civility of Plagiarism - that it is the perpetual exercise of the Mind :
