Same story as many of my age... My ears first pricked up to music at the Two Tone/Ska era. I remember hearing Rappers Delight and thinking that's something cool there, "borrowed" my sisters Boogie and Funk tunes, listened to a lot of what we called Jazz Funk at the time. When Bam came along with Planet Rock, i knew "my own thing" had at last arrived. Got into Electro then Hip Hop, scratched records, cut breaks, breakdanced on plenty of lino and cardboard, still listened to Funk, Soul, and Boogie, had a brief time getting down at the Go Go. Rare Groove and Jazz was big once i started going out getting on it, particularly in my home town. Hip Hop was always there. Started hunting for rare tunes, breaks.. Then Acid House arrived & knocked us all sideways, had decks still, bought samplers and keyboards, sold some, bought some more. All went on till around mid 90s then lost the love for it.
Music tastes changed, settled down, got married, had a beautiful son, after a few years had the time to be able to get my records out and started to track down the stuff i lost or never had online, realized so much was on Soundcloud now as edits.
My mates bought me Traktor as a 40th birthday present and that got me back into collecting tunes, and gave me the creativity and flexibility i always wanted from a DJ set up.
Got back into making "my own stuff" firstly through edits just to learn how to do things and then by making my own mid tempo chuggers.
Still just a punter, and all this is for fun, but it keeps me off the streets at night.
