A further track in my series of tunes inspired by HBO's remarkable TV dramatisation of the Game of Thrones saga, from George R.R. Martin's 'A Song Of Ice and Fire' novels. In the story, one of the key religions, the worship of the Lord of Light, is centred on belief in the existence of two deities, in the words of Red priestess Melisandre: "A god of light and love and joy, and a god of darkness, evil, and fear, eternally at war." R'hllor is the god of fire, which provides light, heat, and life, and struggles against darkness, cold, and death, represented by an opposing deity, the Great Other. The common prayer of the followers of the Lord of Light begins, "The night is dark and full of terrors", followed by the response line, "Lord, cast your light upon us." It isn't what you might call a gentle religion though. More likely to involve human sacrifice than afternoon tea with the Vicar!
