Die Laufmaschine

The laufmaschine (in German: Die Laufmaschine), as the first means of personal person-powered transport to make use of the two-wheeler principle, is regarded as the forerunner of the bicycle. This first machine was invented by Baron Karl Drais in Mannheim, Germany, and patented in France in February 1818. Known in English as a dandy-horse, such machines, with both wheels in-line, were propelled by the rider pushing along the ground with the feet as in regular walking or running. The front wheel and handlebar assembly was hinged to allow steering. Baron Drais named his invention as a Laufmaschine (his own terminology, German for "running machine"), and such vehicles were also called velocipedes, or draisines and, in French, draisiennes. As the forerunner of the modern bicycle, I thought it was appropriate to produce a tune to celebrate this early strand in the DNA of the modern bicycle and a fitting way to open my set of tunes inspired by cycling and bicycles, 'Velocipedia Magnifica'!
