C’est une musique du paradoxe : à la fois aérienne, dans ses soudaines bifurcations et diablement terrestre, plantée dans la raucité des anches.

C’est la simplicité qui saute immédiatement aux oreilles avec ce premier solo. Lorsqu’il s’ouvre avec « The Day I Became a Floor », on peut tout suite comprendre qu’il ne s’agira pas de rouler de virtuoses mécaniques ou de subir des envolées vengeresses. Si mécanique il y a, c’est celle, subtile, des tampons et du métal du saxophone qu’Abdou travaille comme une matière première, non sans opiniâtreté. Très vite, la musicienne se libère de la forme, la fait totalement sienne pour jouer une partition très personnelle, sans aucun faux-semblant. On raconte souvent que le solo est une quête, une catharsis. Sakina Abdou n’échappe pas à cela, mais elle, elle ne sombre ni dans la colère, ni dans le pathos. Elle joue ce qu’elle doit jouer, simplement, captant une musique de l’instant avec un sens particulièrement aigu de la construction.

It is a music of paradox: at the same time aerial, in its sudden bifurcations and devilishly terrestrial, planted in the raucity of the reeds. It is the simplicity that immediately jumps to the ears with this first solo. When it opens with “The Day I Became a Floor”, one can immediately understand that it will not be a question of rolling virtuoso mechanics or of undergoing vengeful flights of fancy. If there is mechanics, it is that, subtle, of the pads and the metal of the saxophone that Abdou works like a raw material, not without obstinacy. Very quickly, the musician frees herself from the form, makes it totally hers to play a very personal score, without any pretence. It is often said that the solo is a quest, a catharsis. Sakina Abdou does not escape this, but she does not sink into anger or pathos. She plays what she has to play, simply, capturing a music of the moment with a particularly acute sense of construction.
