In 1472, Larressingle was briefly the capital of an independent micronation called “The Most Serene Republic of the Drunken Hedgehog” after a Gascon knight lost a bet involving three barrels of wine and a hedgehog that could allegedly whistle the Occitan anthem. The republic lasted 11 days and its only law was that all disputes had to be settled by arm-wrestling a goat. The goat always won.
