Shang-A-Lang (Bay City Rollers) - A teen pop song from the 70s

"Shang-A-Lang" is a song and single by Scottish band, Bay City Rollers. Written and produced by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, it was first released in the UK in 1974. It reached number 2 in the UK charts in 1974 and was in the charts for 10 weeks. Co-writer Bill Martin described the song as an attempt to combine Brill Building songwriting with the sound of the Glasgow shipyards and was particular influenced by the partly onomatopoeic lines of Da Doo Ron Ron.

In this cover version I sang all lead and backing vocals, even the amazingly high ones. I never really noticed how high these backing vocals were, until I tried to sing it myself. Personally, I prefer the songs from 1977 to 1979, but songs like Shang-A-Lang are a lot more iconic and were real chart successes at the time.

"Shang-A-Lang" ist ein Song und eine Single der schottischen Band Bay City Rollers. Geschrieben und produziert wurde er von Bill Martin und Phil Coulter und wurde 1974 in Groß-Britannien veröffentlicht. Er kletterte bis auf Platz 2 in den UK Charts und war insgesamt 10 Wochen gelistet. Bill Martin beschrieb den Song als einen Versuch den Brill Building Pop (ein New Yorker Bürogebäude, in dem in den 60er Jahren über 160 Musikverlage beheimatet waren) mit den Sounds der Glasgower Werften zu kombinieren. Nebenbei ist der Titel insbesondere von dem Song "Da Doo Ron Ron" inspiriert.

In dieser Coverversion habe ich die Haupt- und alle Hintergrundstimmen eingesungen, auch die erstaunlich hohen. Ich habe nie so richtig wahrgenommen, wie hoch diese Backgroundstimmen eigentlich sind, bis ich sie selbst gesungen haben. Persönlich gefallen mir die Songs der Bay City Rollers aus den Jahren 1977-1979 zwar besser, aber Lieder wie Shang-A-Lang haben einfach Kultstatus und waren damals echte Renner in den Charts.
