Jon Boud's All The Rage Show Replay On This Week Jon Talks To #WeAreTheBlackCap campaigner (& Trax FM - All The Rage regular) Alex Green On Not Just The Black Cap, But Everything Else.
#WeAreTheBlackCap (In Camden), a grassroots community group campaigning to re-open the iconic LGBT+ cabaret and bar in Camden Town as a community-owned space. The Black Cap has been a historic LGBTQ+ performance arts focused pub, club, cabaret venue and basically community space that has been creating a safe and thriving environment for LGBTQ+ people. #WeAreTheBlackCap is working to ensure the fully accessible building is still a community-owned resource to nurture queer culture and community, support LGBTQ+ people, including the most marginalized among us, and invite Camden and beyond to meet and celebrate LGBTQ+ people on their own terms.
The site has been a pub for over 350 years, and the existing building, with its unique gabled facade and bust of Mother Black Cap, was built in the 1870s. The Black Cap became a hub for the LGBT+ community in the early 1960s, offering gay men a refuge before the partial decriminalization of homosexuality in 1967.
Its current owner abruptly shuttered The Black Cap in 2015, and we have been working since then to re-open one of the few remaining landmarks of historical, cultural, and artistic value for the LGBTQ+ community.
