Juheun’s latest release, “Zebrah” creeps into the subconscious mind,
transporting the listener to a dark jungle. Immediately surrounded by a world of
unknown creatures and a hauntingly groovy bassline, I feel as though I’m searching
this eerie forest for the ever elusive Zebrah, pondering where to go next in this
cerebral journey of tribal drums and mystifying sounds. I imagine that in this forest,
one path is made up of evocative animalistic sounds, but just as I begin down that
path, I notice another, one made up of striking inorganic sounds. With the stability
of the dynamic tech house roots holding fast in the background making it impossible
for one not to start shimmying to the music, Juheun has articulately intertwined all
the subtle nuances of each element of the track to create a masterpiece.
The accompanying remixes to Zebrah, one by Angel Alanis the other by
Tom Whitcombe are extremely well designed, and are excellent interpretations of
the original. Sometimes when one is so captivated by the original, it is difficult to
become enthused by remixes; quite the opposite in this case.
Angel Alanis’ remix develops upon the inorganic electronic foundations of
the original, utilizing entrancing minimal and techno elements to bring us back to
the darker origins of the track. Tom Whitcombes’ remix takes us in a completely
different direction, providing us with a multi-textured landscape and reminding
us to bring our consciousness back to the mythical Zebrah. The original is augmented
here by curious and exciting elements that leave one wanting more. Tom’s remix stands
strong with a lighter, houseier feel as though we are brought to the edge of this
musical jungle where we may finally catch a glimpse of the Zebrah.
Juheun once again doesn’t disappoint, and leaves us wanting more. His
meticulous attention to all of the subtle nuances of the composition, in addition to
the two stellar remixes has created a grand musical experience for the mature ear.
