MUSIC FROM DREAMS:

It began in the early 1990s, at times it was short pieces, at other times it was longer more meandering passages, but always it came with more emotion than I can comfortably word. Sometimes it was sad, reflective, introspective or personal; at other times it was revelational, joyous, humbling, ecstatic or so deeply moving and hopeful that it didn’t seem to belong in this world. It came in periods of immense personal pain, it came in periods of deep fulfillment and inner peace. It came when it wanted. It didn’t when it wouldn’t. Always, waking up with the melody, the atmosphere, the bassline, the voices or harmonies still stirring like a mist through my memory, and then in 2003 I found myself able to begin recording what I heard. Thereafter, the mad dash to bring it out of the dream into the physical world before it faded into forgetfulness began. When I wasn’t hearing the music in dreams, it was coming randomly as the memory of a memory of a song, as if long years had stretched between lives from a time when I’d first heard it ~ like a mirage in the distance that only reveals its shape when I force myself forward across that great distance and suddenly find myself WITHIN the mirage, surrounded by it. Well it’s many years later now, and still the music comes in dreams, comes from somewhere beyond my conscious mind.. and the more I listen to it, the harder I reach to hear the individual layers, the deeper and rawer the emotion it strikes as a heart breaking chord within me, the clearer it becomes. For years I minimised it, at first keeping the music just to myself and my parents, then just to a couple of friends. Now though in the dreams, I’m listening to the music in an audience, a large audience, all of whom hear the music yet all of whom may not remember when they wake ~ and while I do, it seems I now choose to remind those who have forgotten, those who are seeking to connect with something deeper in a time of uncertainty, something hopeful, something of Light that illuminates the Darkness once and for all within and without, one thing reminding us that Hope yet remains, that music is a language which harmonises not only sound, but souls. This is not music trying to be mainstream. There are no scantily clad women or men asking you to idolise their nakedness or their face in exchange for your fandom, your money, your immediate sensory gratification. This music doesn’t seek to follow a trend, or start a new one. It’s just music that I hear in my dreams. And that’s all.

My Mentor asked me long ago: “How will you know peace ~ if you do not recognise peace within your own self? How will you recognise the Light and Hope within your Darkness ~ if all you see is the Darkness which stands between you, the Light and Hope? How will you know yourself ~ if you seek for yourself only in others, and will not look deep within your own self wherein only you dwell?”

I’m inviting you now on a musical journey of remembering Peace and the Light of Hope which lives within your self, together listening to music and songs that I remember from within a dream.

Enjoy.
