Sometimes contact mics do pick up sound transmitted through air. When you attach them to an object that is easily excited by moving air molecules (wind, sound), then yeah - contact mics work kind of like ordinary mics. In this recording, I was recording the wind howling through a large scaffolding, and discovered afterwards that there was audible birdsong too. I guess parts of the structure were light enough to pick up those sounds.
