DJ Kid - Evolution Mix Tapes

Between 1990 -1992 the amount of dance music that was coming out on vinyl was enormous. Every week there would be a raft of new labels releasing all manner of styles. From House, Techno, Rave and many different variants in between.

I started to get sent a ton of pre-releases / white labels from promo companies such as Rush Release and Power who were the biggest at the time. In return all you had to do was fill in a reaction sheet and senit back with a weekly chart. The sheer volume of records I would receive in the post was crazy at times. I was getting that much that my postwomen could no longer carry them all, and they would send a van to drop them off at my house instead.

The majority of the music being sent to me was geared up towards the more commercial side of the club-scene. This was simply down to having started my career on the club circuit. Luckily for me I discovered a record shop called Global Records on Dalry Road in Edinburgh. This is where I would source music more in tune to where I was heading sound wise.

My Evolution mix tape series would see a significant shift in musical style for me. Out we're the more commercial Techno sounding club tracks. To be replaced with a much harder Hip Hop influenced sound which was to become known as Breakbeat.
