Zouk is fast carnival music that arose in the '80s on the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Also called zouk béton, zouk is often sung in French Creole and is influenced by West African music. Zouk has also enjoyed popularity in French-speaking countries in Africa and Europe, as well as Quebec.
