Trip hop is downtempo electronic music that grew out of hip hop and house in the mid-'90s. Also called the Bristol sound after its city of origin, trip hop features a bass-heavy drumbeat that emulates the slowed breakbeat samples typical of '90s hip hop, and vocal styles that range from reggae to R&B.
