So what was the first ever Jazz FM sampler? It wasn't what you'd expect. In 1995 they joined with GQ and Verve to produce a cassette of current blues music. And today we get to enjoy it in a digital form, a way it has never been heard before. For October we'll start "Driftin'" through their next trio of Contemporary Jazz from 2001/2002.

The release aligns with a pivotal moment for the UK radio station 102.2 Jazz FM. Around 1994 and 1995, the station underwent major programming shifts. Under agreement with the Radio Authority, it broadened its core playlist to blend mainstream soul, jazz fusion, and blues music to capture a wider audience before re-emphasizing popular mainstream jazz later in 1995. Promos like Cool Blues were distributed to promote this multi-genre, smooth-yet-gritty musical identity.
