The Nakba (“catastrophe” in Arabic) is the mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians during the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. Around 750,000 Palestinians were expelled or forced to flee, and over 400–500 towns and villages were destroyed or emptied and often renamed or repopulated. For Palestinians, it is both the foundational historical trauma and an ongoing process of dispossession, shaping their identity, memory, and struggle to this day
