Masterworks Music kicks off it’s third year in fine fashion with His Dirty Secrets and the “Girlfriends Revenge EP.” Don’t let the titles fool you, the only thing dirty about this EP are the grooves… which are about as filthy as a quaalude-fueled brothel on Sunday morning.

Low slung vibes permeate both sides of this deadly, wax affair and HDS wastes no time getting things cooking with opener, “All The Way.” A looped bass riff keeps the pace for close to seven minutes while horn stabs and jangly guitars bounce around next to soulful chants. “Fantom (African Woman)” comes up next with a percussive stomp and vocals courtesy of Nigeria’s own funk king.

Flip it over for “Floatin’” where a familiar, Ashford & Simpson groove gets some heavy scalpel work and updated key melodies to a beautiful effect. Once the stings hit about half-way through, you too will believe in the restorative power of love…truly gorgeous. Wrapping us up is “Prelude,” a hip-shaking rework of an absolute classic… perfect for the wind-up or wind-down…
