The History of Radioactive FM Dance

Radioactive FM Dance has its roots in the original UK pirate-radio and rave scene. The station’s public branding traces the Radioactive name back to 1989, while its official history says it first fired up on the FM airwaves in 1990. The clearest way to describe it is that Radioactive began forming in 1989 and started broadcasting as a pirate station around 1990.
The original station broadcast across frequencies ranging from 101.8 to 108.1 FM. Its founding DJs and supporters became known as the 108 Crew, a name that still represents Radioactive’s original home, identity and old-skool spirit.

A central figure in Radioactive’s early story was the late Andy Williams, known as DJ Pure, who helped establish the station and its community. Radioactive FM Dance continues in his memory, preserving the raw, independent pirate-radio attitude that shaped the original station.

After the original FM broadcasts ended, Radioactive was eventually brought back as an online station by Sam Williams AKA DJ Naughty. A 2026 station post described the move from the airwaves to online as happening 18 years earlier, placing the online relaunch at approximately 2008.

Today, Radioactive FM Dance broadcasts underground dance music online around the clock. Its DJs play everything from Acid House, Old Skool Rave and Hardcore to House, Techno, Jungle, Drum & Bass, Breaks, Trance, Disco and newer underground sounds. The station has grown from a local pirate crew into an international family of DJs and listeners, while keeping the same independent spirit that started it all.
