Luckeez Mfowethu is a Radio and Dance music DJ/Producer from East London South Africa. He was born in Johannesburg and grew up around the Eastern Cape in East London, Fort Beaufort, and King William’s Town. This moving around meant that he was unable to maintain long term friendships and relationships and thus became a full-time radio enthusiast at a very young age. Growing up recording radio presenters on radio to mimic their presentation styles to find his, he later started Dj’ing during his High School days in 1995 during Grade 10 at 15, and joined community radio at 19 to later host his very first radio show The Slamming Breakfast Show at 21 with Imonti FM.
In 1998 after dropping out of Mechanical Engineering school at Walter Sisulu University he pursued his passion for radio by helping start the first Xhosa Speaking Community Radio Station for the East London and Mdantsane community while studying at Stanford Business College. This dream came to a reality when Imonti FM went on air for the first time in 2001. He joined Umhlobo Wenene FM in 2006 and made a name for himself with a weekend radio show known as Abahlali Abangalali. He later released a dance album titled High Grade in 2008 with hits like “Uthand’izinto Ayisosono” and “Intweziphantsi” but later abandoned his Djíng to focus on his full-time job then of being a Music Compiler for Umhlobo Wenene FM and a weekend night time radio host for the SABC radio Station..
He is a winner of a South African Radio Award for Best Radio Imaging in his latest capacity as the Audio-Visual Producer for Umhlobo Wenene FM. Currently he is the Host and producer of Umhlobo Wenene FM’s weekend radio show Vuka Mzantsi commanding 2 Million listeners every Saturday. Having gone back to his passion for DJíng and dance music production he has played numerous venues and events since his return in September 2021.
