Drifting ft Pascale Martini - Song Of The Twilight Zone

May 1990:

Our group, Benny Profane, is in Prague, we'll play three gigs as part of a European tour that also takes in Austria and East/West Germany.

The Prague gigs are to promote the Velvet Revolution/We Vote campaign, to get out the vote in the forthcoming post Communist elections.
The main event, a Festival on Střelecký Island on the River Vltava, doesn't happen - rain stops play.

We do play two outdoor/daytime gigs, one on the Old City Square, and a short notice gig at the out of town Velká Chuchle Racecourse.

Gig three is in the Prague Rock Cafe.

We've become friendly and played gigs with some of the other groups who've traveled to Czechoslovakia for the Festival. Pascale Martini, the singer with the Swiss group Blu Dolphin, mentions that she'd like to visit Liverpool on a forthcoming trip to the UK. Back in Liverpool for a week, Pascale and I have a go at writing some songs, but none of them take.

May 2020:

Lockdown. Covid-19 is going to be a nice little earner for some.

All watched over by a Tory Government disgrace.

I'm at home looking through a stack of old gig posters when I spot the poster for the canceled Prague ‘We Vote’ gig from 30 years before.

Was it 30 years to the day? Let's say it was. What are the chances!

As I'm wondering what ever became of Pascale I remember myself, as I sometimes have to, that the internet exists.

One search later we're back in touch and from her home in Zurich Pascale is asking if I'm still doing music?

I send her a couple of tracks I'm currently working on, one is an instrumental I'm calling ‘Folk Song of the Twilight Zone’.

To my surprise Pascale sends the track back with added singing, now you're talking.

After a bit of back and forth online we end up with 'Song of the Twilight Zone', the first in a series of songs they're calling ‘Drifting ft...’

As time goes on I've been able to call on various authors and singers to guest on Drifting ft... tracks.

As I like to say ‘I've got to be Drifting’.

Joe & I met in 1990 when our groups Benny Profane (GB) and Blu Dolphin (SUI) played a gig together in Prague, the gig was in support of the upcoming elections in Czechoslovakia.
The people were ready to create a new life after the long awaited fall of the wall and all was very encouraging.
All politics there should change and freedom should replace suppression. That was the time, East freed itself of the shackles of totalitarianism. Big time!
Today 30 years later, as we tried to make the best out of everything and a lot of things are really pleasing, we realise that some very important areas of life worsen so much, because greed and egotism nipped freedom in the bud.
Inequality grew that much, as the poorest don’t have a chance to breathe anymore.
One more spark was enough to set cities on fire.
Social media reaches all living rooms, nothing remains hidden .
A big storm will guide the planet now, because inequality is to be found everywhere.
Now everybody will raise their voice to cry out their situation and everybody won’t stop tensions till changes take place.
In fact – the pictures we see and the voices we hear from around the globe shows us that something in the whole system goes very wrong and needs to be fixed – now.
That's why we wrote these words & sounds.
After these storms, we are ready to build new rules and change games – Humanity for all beings on this still beautiful planet shall grow and win.

I should add that it was my random find of a poster for the Prague 1990 gig that led me to reconnecting with Pascale for the first time in 30 years, & here we are.

Joe und ich trafen uns 1990 zum ersten mal, als unsere bands Benny Profane (GB) und Blu Dolphin (SUI) zusammen in Prag spielten. Die gigs unterstützten die kommenden wahlen in der Tschechoslowakei.

Die leute waren nach dem langersehnten mauerfall bereit, neues zu kreieren, alles war sehr ermutigend.

Die ganze politik sollte sich ändern und freiheit sollte die unterdrückung ersetzen. Das war die zeit, wo sich der Osten von den fesseln des totalitären systems befreite. Big Time!

Heute 30 jahre später, nachdem wir versuchten das beste aus allem zu machen und auch viele dinge wirklich angenehm sind, realisieren wir, dass sich bestimmte sehr wichtige lebensbereiche verschlechterten und gier und egoismus die freiheit im keim ersticken lässt.

Ungleichheit wuchs so stark, dass die ärmsten keine luft mehr zum atmen haben.

Ein funke genügte, um die cities in brand zu versetzen.

Soziale medien erreichen alle wohnzimmer der welt, nichts bleibt versteckt.

Ein großer sturm wird den planeten jetzt führen, da ungleichheit überall zu finden ist. Jeder wird seine stimme erheben und seine ungerechtigkeit hinausschreien und niemand wird die spannungen stoppen können, bis änderungen spürbar werden. Die bilder, die wir vom gesamten globus sehen und die stimmen, die wir hören zeigen uns, dass etwas tief im system sehr falsch läuft, und wir sind bereit neue rollen und regeln aufzustellen und das spiel zu ändern. Menschlichkeit für alle wesen auf diesem noch wundervollen planeten soll wachsen und gewinnen.
