Tech, Latin, Funky & Afrohouse Mixes

by Joey V

Tech house is a House subgenre that emerged around the mid-1990s in the UK. Before morphing into a genre, it simply referred to an approach to DJing that tried to find a middle ground between house and Techno.

Latin House emerged as a new style of House music in the second half of the 1980s, when artists like Raz & Liz Torres mixed elements of Hispanic American Music music with Puerto Rican, Mexican, Cuban, Dominican and Colombian origin.

Funky house is a subgenre of House that originated around the mid-1990s. The genre kept many of the "classic", original features of house music in contrast to other, distant offshoots that had already developed by then, embracing influences and samples from Funk, Disco and Soul. It has its roots in both Chicago House and Garage House, as well as Deep House to some extent.

Afro house is a subgenre of House that originated in South Africa by fusing elements of Deep House and Southern African Music, most notably the preceding Kwaito. It is characterized by a relaxing, hypnotizing groove incorporating drums such as shakers and congas on top of a four-on-the-floor House beat playing at around 120 BPM. Although it may occasionally share similarities with Tribal House, it typically has a deeper, more organic, soulful and melodic sound, even drawing from Progressive House in some cases. Another common trait is sampling vocals from various African Music or soulful, original features.
