and here are today's top stories.

Global markets are ending the week in an odd split. On Wall Street, investors keep pushing stocks to record highs because they trust central banks to step in if growth softens. But the latest earnings season also shows that expensive bets on AI, energy transition and capacity don’t always pay off. That makes the rally more fragile.

Germany is a good example of that. Output is basically where it was back in 2019, and core industries like chemicals don’t expect a real upswing for 2026. At the same time, the country’s flagship carmaker, Volkswagen, has reported its first quarterly loss under CEO Oliver Blume as write-downs and US tariffs bite, even though production has not yet been hit by the Nexperia chip issue.

There is, however, some momentum in finance. The European Central Bank is pushing ahead with a digital euro, aiming for 2029, and Italy’s UniCredit is tightening its grip on Greece’s Alpha Bank.

And in health care, Denmark’s Novo Nordisk has raised its offer for US biotech Metsera to secure future obesity drugs – proof that growth capital still flows where margins look convincing.

And that’s a look at today’s economic developments. Until next time, take care and stay informed.
