Scenario :

A single mother and her three daughters, aged 14, 16, and 19, have just moved in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts. Attending the same high school, the 3 girls are about to discover the challenges of fitting in at their new school. While Sarah, the eldest, feels increasingly comfortable in class and with her classmates, she also discovers local legends. One story in particular resurfaces every night after clubbing : the story everyone talks, about the infamous witches, these women who lived isolated and independent lives, closely connected to nature and animals, and whose downfall was driven to tragedy by the madness, jealousy, and ignorance of the locals. As Halloween approaches, a particularly important and widely celebrated holiday in this state, a darker atmosphere settles over the school....

Sarah feels increasingly drawn to these tales of witch hunts, demons, rituals, and magic. She decides to conduct her own research, but the deeper she delves, the more involved she feels, sometimes even observed. She perceives things, begins to see and hear.
Sarah finally confides in her mother, who then reveals secrets about their family's past, about the past of the women in their family. After these revelations, more disturbing than reassuring, Catherine decides to take her three daughters to spend Halloween weekend at her childhood home, an hour's drive from Boston, a very old house that has always belonged to the family. The house is located at the end of the last road, on the edge of the forest, at the gates of the infamous town of Salem… Thus begins, for Sarah, a true descent into hell…

bonus 👉 Interview with the director of SALEM, Rita Molina, for the Versus Media catalogue :

" This soundtrack is striking, hypnotic, it deeply moves me !
The Franco-Hungarian artist "I Hate Robots" has created music imbued with a tension and mysticism that seem to come straight from that era.
The composer has delivered an intense, profound, and breathtakingly precise score, music that plays with the conventions of yesterday and today, blending genres and colors with exceptional fluidity: his music literally took my breath away !
Faced with such talent as a musical storyteller, such emotional realism, I wonder if he himself wasn't, in another life, an actor, or even an actress, during that appalling 17th-century trial ?

My film is primarily about women.
I wanted to tell the story of these women who, overnight, found themselves alone, without men, and who decided to unite to form this small community of peasant and agricultural women, isolated from the rest of the town and completely independent. Women with women.
Free women, free to think, to work, to celebrate nature and life, free to discover, to invent, and to experiment… This is the true story of the Salem witches : women tortured and executed for choosing to live as women.
From this authentic and tangible truth, I sought to draw the viewer into a mystical and magical journey, a slow and profound descent into the heart of this terrifying legend.

By working with I Hate Robots, I hoped for a soundtrack that would support the power of the images, but ultimately, it transcends the power of the images; in fact, it simply doesn't need it, it soars beyond them !

It's a masterpiece. "
