3SOME ::: 2 humans discuss 3 songs

by DJ Fattie B

My name is Fattie B
and I created this series of interviews I am calling:
3SOME.

Have you ever wondered why certain songs
have such deep-seated connections to our memories?
Musical melodies can serve as auditory ‘post-it notes’,
helping us remember significant events or moments.
To understand why,
consider the actual neuroscience behind this:
Music engages & activates various areas of the brain,
including those associated with memories and emotions.
Studies have shown that 'music doesn’t just
help us retrieve stored memories, it also helps generate new ones'.
A song can be connected to an event or a moment in time,
forming an embedded soundtrack of sorts.
And, when re-played,
can immediately spark strong recollections.
But just why is this true?
Well, there are in fact, many reasons, including:
#1. Emotional :
Music releases feel-good chemicals like dopamine and serotonin
which evoke strong emotions & can often enhance
(and preserve) certain memories.
#2. Life Events :
Music often accompanies our distinctive life moments,
such as weddings, funerals, graduations, dances, etc,
(which can also help us reconnect to these memories later on).
#3. Attention :
Music can capture our awareness,
which increases the likelihood that it will be encoded upon the memory
and the details of these life events.
#4. Familiarity
The more familiar the music, the more spontaneous & powerful
the strength of the memories often triggered can be.
And lastly, and most importantly,
#5. the Memories themselves:
Listening to a familiar song can trigger & bring back feelings
from a specific time or place in our lives.
This is because the repetition of melodic cells
makes melodies memorable,
while also making them attractive to us as listeners.
The term 'musical security' comes from hearing things
that we’ve heard somewhere else before.
This subject matter is the catalyst for this podcast.
During each of these episodes, I will delve into discussions
with each of my special guests
to explore the way that 3 specific songs
hold deeply emotional & reminiscent connections
that transport them directly to specific times, places,
memories, or moments from their pasts…
in other words, these discussions will explore
just how and why we find music & certain songs are
emotionally & exquisitely evocative.
and more directly, why these 3 songs
hold this power for each of our episodes' special guests.
