The grand papa of German Techno has been paving the way for what constitutes club culture since his first impact on the Frankfurt music scene back in 1982, at Frankfurt’s legendary club Dorian Gray. Back then, Sven Väth’s marathon sets, threading a tightrope through all kinds of electronic music, disco and proto-minimal tracks, won him a devoted following. Soon after, he was performing in his pop group OFF, and his audience quickly grew from local to worldwide. His debut LP Accident In Paradise incorporated spiritual and ambient elements into the evolving techno template, and also demonstrated Väth’s unique artistic vision. What further set Väth apart from other DJs is his commitment to community, and to the advancement of the music. After the trailblazing club Omen closed, Väth’s Cocoon network grew to incorporate a booking agency, events company, and record label, not to mention Frankfurt’s ground-breaking venue that set the standard for design, concept and opulence, all rolled into a fine weekend’s entertainment. Despite Cocoon’s closure, the long-running Cocoon party remains the epicentre of the Ibiza calendar, and Väth still maintains his love and enthusiasm for new music in all shapes and forms.
