Sounds of Chumza

SoulShelter Recordings   ))   Cape Town, South Africa

Chumza’s passion for music started at an early age influenced by his older brother Luks Gidane who worked at a radio station, Luks Gidane would bring CD’s back home with all sorts of genres, Luks Gidane’s friends would visit with their house mix demos and they would have listening sessions before they would cue the mixes on air. This is when Chumza found his passion for deep house. He started attending events that were hosted by local DJ’s and later on would find himself signed under a label called Just House owned by DJ Mthetho. Chumza started collecting his own records and also bought himself DJ equipment, 2 Technics 1210 turntables, and started teaching himself the art of a DJ-ing.

Wanting to display his new acquired skill, Chumza started looking for places to play and got himself a residency at Tsoga Lounge in Langa, a well-known township just outside the central business district of Cape Town. From here, Chumza started playing around Cape Town’s major hot spots such as Mzoli’s. From here he started getting bookings which allowed him to explore other places around South Africa, and has been booked for various liquor promotional activations, namely – Peroni, Miller, Brutal Fruit, and Savanah.

In 2009 Chumza started working at the then Soul to Soul Records now known as Syndicate Records as Record sales man run by Dino Michael. Later he would attend the ADMT music conference which was hosted at the Cape Town CBD, this saw him being chosen by the judges and hosts of the conference, Dino Michael, Charles Webster, Atjazz and Divinti, as one of the selected few to win the remix of Charles Webster’s Learning To Love Me which was released in March 2014 under Charles Webster’s own record label, Miso Records, the other selected winner was one of South Africa’s youngest and most prominent producers Da Capo.
Later that year he made a decision to start his own record company which is now known as Soulshelter Recordings. His first release was an extended play with 3 tracks and featured a young lady by the name of Yolanda Fyrus.
