I started making a Special Mixtape again, this time Indie & EDM. I'm really enjoying Indie lately and I thought it would be a good idea to put it together with EDM! This includes artists like: Capital Cities, The Presets, I Am Lightyear, Joe Gil, Dirty South, Topher Jones and more!

So, what's Indie? And what is EDM?

Indie
Indie stands for Independent music (in reference to record labels) and can be defined as a "music style" or a "specific group of artists". Let's start with Indie defined as a music style. Most people find Indie music really have it's own unique music stye, the way the artists use their instruments. Guitars aren't just used for power chords or riffs. Instead they serve the purpose for texture within the musical layers of a song. So in a way, the instrumental sounds are just for support and haven't really got a main influence on the song. The singer clearly has a major roll and is very specific for Indie. Most songs are about the artists himself and what he/she had done in his/her life. Examples of indie subgenres: indie hip-hop, indie pop, indie rock, indie folk, indie electronica and much more.
Moving on to indie "as a specific group of artists", most Indie artists aren't really popular. Why? All the indie artists aren't supported by major record labels. So you won't be hearing them on the radio very often. However, some Indie artists are willing to sign up with a major record label for big (money) support. But it's always good to sign up for a major label, right? Not totally true. Most mainstream labels really force some artists to change their style so the mainstream audience stay entertained. Indie artists doesn't really want to be very popular and mainstream and enjoy the smaller stages as well. While being independent from major labels, they maintain there own unique style and that's why there is a specific group of artists that is really unique for Indie. Examples for indie artists are: Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, Yo La Tengo, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and The Decemberists.

EDM
EDM stands for Electronic Dance Music, and is a catch all phrase for various genres of DJ-essential music. The term was coined in recent years as dance music began to have a larger commercial crossover. Mainly it's all about the electronic sounds and therefore a singer is not required.

So now you finally know what these two terms are, it's actually really nice to put them together. Indie is all about the (unique) singer performance and EDM is all about (electronic) sounds. So it's not a bad idea to put them together in one Mixtape, right? Oh and by the way, I changed the video's too! Let me know what you guys think in the comments below!
