Welcome to ep3 of the Tech House Series.

Tech house is a subgenre of house music that mixes elements of techno with house. The term tech house developed as a shorthand record store name for a category of electronic dance music that combined musical aspects of techno, such as "rugged basslines" and "steely beats," with the harmonies and grooves of progressive house...As a mixing style, tech-house often brings together deep or minimal techno music, the soulful and jazzy end of house, some minimal techno....There is some overlap with progressive house, which too can contain deep, soulful, dub, and techno elements (Wikipedia) It is said to have origins in the UK from around the 1990's.

It is interesting when trying to define tech house that there is a tendency to see an overlap and sometimes even a fusion of sub genres of house music from techno to progressive. With the Deep House Series well established, the Techno Series going from strength to strength it was only natural to progress with to be honest my favourite, tech house. Again, with these mixes, I look to the dj to give their own personal interpretation of what is tech house.

Groovetonic is a dj/producer residing in Italy. He is another dj/producer who I have been following especially with his producing. To my ears, you get nice classic tech house beats and you can hear this in his latest release, https://soundcloud.com/groovetonic/groovetonic-jack-had-a-groovepp-music where he goes ol' skool house with the vocals but keeps the classic tech housebeat at the same time. Whether it is with or without vocals, it just simply works how he fuses house music with techno. As he puts it,

"As the genre's name, for me tech house its a "bridge" between house and techno. It's my favourite style for now because it brings together these two genres of music. I like to play in my sets more variety of genre of music from house to techno, so it could be melodic, deep or more underground."

Welcome to ep22 of the Deep House Series.

Deep house as a subgenre of house music is pretty massive. It is said to originate in the 1980's from Chicago. Generally when we talk of deep house, you would expect the bpm to be between 120 & 130 although the more and more I talk to producers and djs am feeling this tends to be between 116 to 126 bpm tops. With the Deephouse series, I am hoping to show what I find to be the different takes on this with the different mixtapes from the select guests in the UK & across the globe.

Over to one of my exclusives from dj/producer, Marcus Ullmarker. I have been following him for some time now since he played a few years back at La Divina k and he knows my favourite in particular rests with his Sunset Beat Sessions part 1 & 2. When listening to his sound, he goes for the darker side of deep house which he refers to as deep acid house with flows in tech house. Perhaps with him playing on the Barcelona and Ibiza scene
comes his love of music with percussions and hypnotic beats as he defines.

"Deep House to me is characterised by hypnotic beats, tech percussions, vocals with spanish traces, altogether which is sexy ambient'

Welcome to ep2 of the Tech House Series.
With the Deep House Series well established, the Techno Series going from strength to strength it was only natural to progress with to be honest my favourite, tech house. Again, with these mixes, I look to the dj to give their own personal interpretation of what is tech house.

So we open the series with Aldana, a dj from Madrid, Spain. I have been following Aldana, I believe for a number of years, introduced to me roughly when I started DJSWORK and was very happy when he did a mix for the Deep House Series last year. (Matinales – The-deep-house-series-ep13-aldana) Initially, he had roots in the main in progressive and tribal house, but these days now residing in Dundee, Scotland, his passion in house music has turned in the main to tech house which kind of makes sense when you look at the definition of what is tech house.

Now on to the second episode of the series. Massive thanks to Aldana for opening the series.

"For me tech house is the fusion between house music and it's sub genres, progressive house, to give you uplifting backbeats with a touch of industrial sounds from techno. This can be seen when listening to classic tech, to deep tech to even minimal tech"

matinales

With this podcast I tried to go back and show how it has influenced the sound I like which gets me dancing whether the influence is classic, balearic, deep, vocal or simply traditional.

Massive respect to my peeps and dj/producers, ColeJonson Juanito, Gerald Henderson, Pagano.

"My vision of Tech house reflects my evolution as a DJ during all this years. Back in 2006, I started playing progressive house,
tribal house and ten years later these styles have evolved, but my roots remain. It can be deep, tribal, melodic, groovy or have profound vocals, so it has all the ingredients for my music recipe. I wanted to record this mix showing my definition of tech house, not focusing myself on the dance floor, but just enjoying
mixing and choosing tracks for this musical journey like I did in the old days. I hope all of you enjoy as much as I did recording it."

Generally, techno is defined as a form of electronic dance music that is said to have emerged in Detroit, Michigan during the mid-to-late 1980s,

"Stylistically, techno is generally repetitive instrumental music, often at times produced for use in a continuous DJ set. The central rhythmic component is most often in common time (4/4), where time is marked with a bass drum on each quarter note pulse, a backbeat played by snare or clap on the second and fourth pulses of the bar, and an open hi-hat sounding every second eighth note. The tempo tends to vary between approximately 120 to 150 beats per minute (bpm), depending on the style of techno. " (Wikipedia)

I will be honest my passion for techno is somewhat recent, being over the last two years but again what I have learnt that no matter what general definition is given to techno it is interesting to see how other genres such as house when mixed give different interpretations and explains to a degree why people tend to put techno into one bag and refer to it just as electronic dance music.

After the success of the Deep House Series I thought it was time to look at techno and get an interpretation of this through the Dj.

It has been a while since I have been trying to get this dj/producer, Rodrigo Moranto to do a guest mix for the Techno Series and finally it's here. I have been following Rodrigo for quite some time and to be honest has been a great mentor in me getting more involved towards me doing my own thing in terms of music. To me with this podcast, he takes you on a journey with techno in its pure form, simple and clean beats. Look out for his track 28 mins in, 'As Good As It Gets' (unsigned) featured on this podcast.

"My vision of techno is hard to say in one definition...it's deep,it's funky, it's minimal...with a soul"
<itunes:summary>Generally, techno is defined as a form of electronic dance music that is said to have emerged in Detroit, Michigan during the mid-to-late 1980s,

Kinda privileged to have Jamie de Rooy do a guest mixtape on the techno series. Abit more personal to me on a level as Jamie de Rooy has always been with me and the DJSWORK family from the very start. It has been a while since he did a podcast for DJSWORK and so I thought it could not better a time than to mark the 4th birthday of Wrong. This set was recorded live from his set at Wrong last week. It is hard to believe that his brainchild, club nite in Vauxhall is turning four years young. His idea has always been from the start and to today, about "no pop or commercial music....but underground tech house and techno with a real edge". I am so happy to see this club nite go from strength to strength and still maintain this ethos.

When I asked him to give me his interpretation of techno, he kept it short and succint but straight to the point,

What better way than to start the new year with my partner in crime and bestie, Thomas Wonderland. Now I have to admit when it comes to techno we don't always see eye to eye but when we do it's boom. Thomas Wonderland takes it on to another level. As the Techno Series is all about the dj's interpretation I took a step back and left him to his own and I am sure you will be pretty impressed. Tech techno backbeats with dark overtones which is kinda his signature sound is how I would describe this podcast.

"Techno is dark, deep, melodic but especially raw. It has to be rolling, it has to come from the ground and goes to your ears, straight into your heart, then spread everywhere into your body.
It must include some, mechanical, industrial sound!"
Heralding from Valencia, but now residing in London is my good friend Carlos aka Koseki. I first came across him thru him playing at La Divina Afterhours. "When I play I have a preference for techno and techno house. Usually the sound is dark and powerful with a twist of grooves added"

I am very pleased to get to hear from Arijit again after the wicked deep house podcast he did for the DJSWORK Series, https://soundcloud.com/matinales/the-deep-house-series-ep14-arijit-sen-1. He has always said when it comes to djiing his passion was for techno and this is clearly reflected in this podcast with the dark an pure overtones of this genre. Enjoy the journey.

"Techno is a style of electronic dance music which has pulsating dark beats with heavy bass lines and it has a distinctive sound which has energetic rhythm what makes people understand the beats and make them dance.

In my view, I prefer to play techno at 126 BPM that means it doesn't get too hard nor too slow hence the deliverance of the sound is perfect for the Techno lovers."

First off we start off with a good friend, Dj Zach Burns who I have followed almost from the beginning and seen him grown to a Dj who I have a lot of time and respect when it comes to djiing. When I asked Zach on his interpretation he said this.

"Techno is something i slowly fell into as i expanded my interests away from Circuit/ Funky House and more into the Deep/ Tech genres. For myself, I love it's raw energy and tough industrial sounds that really hit you, As I have got more into it though I have tended to centre closer to the tribal influences which always bring back memories of club nights and sets where such sounds have stood out & inspired me. This mix features a range of tracks that bring to you my interpretation of Techno, many of which you' will hear in my Tech/ Techno sets at events such as Popcorn & A:M Afterhours. Enjoy this mix and the series to come."

Welcome to ep20 of the Deep House Series.

With the Deep House series, I am hoping to show what I find to be the different takes on this with the different mixtapes from the select guests in the UK & across the globe.

To start 2016 off is Luke Donington aka Cool Hand Luke, Santiago Blue, Bang Bang Club. A well established dj, producer and remixer who has been in the music industry for over 20 years.

He has produced under Santiago Blue and Bang Bang Club and most recently in partnership with Zach Burns under the alias, Donington & Burns. He has remixed for Twisted Records, FFRR, XL, ZTT Records, doing mixes on classic tracks such as Danny J Lewis - Spend The Night and Johnny Dangerous - Beat That Bitch.

I really like the mixed bag of sounds you get from Luke, a fusion of house with tech, techno and minimal which can be heard when listening to this podcast.

Watch out for Luke in 2016 with his first EP coming out in February under Donington under the US record label, Blockhead Recordings.

"For me, What deep house and house is, It's a feeling, that makes you tilt your head back and say yeah! Makes you scream, cry, raise your hands and forget about any troubles you may have. House music creates unity and love, like no other form of music"
With the Deep House series, I am hoping to show what I find to be the different takes on this with the different mixtapes from the select guests in the UK & across the globe.

On to ep19 of the series which is closely tied in with ep18. I came across Ross Peckham thru Donny Christian and have been following his sound for over a year now. It is interesting to learn that Ross has been on the same path as Donny Christian, first starting out in drum and bass, playing vinyl and his passion for house music soon took place and is clearly reflected in his sound, that of the london house, ol' skool and Ibiza house flava.

"I took the plunge in about 2005 to really get into house music and this was mainly down to Donny with his impressive collection of Hed kandi and defected albums & vinyl. I haven't looked back since and now house music is part of my day to day life. I wake up to listen to house and go to sleep listening to house. It's the past and it's the future!
All the best & keep it house always"
If you were to ask the style he plays, expect a range from tech house, techno, iberican house, progressive to deep house. Dj Tony Navas originates from Spain but now resides in Brighton, UK. I first came across Tony Navas through my good friend, Xavi Lopez from the Box Collective, Spain and was fortunate to hear him play live at the La Divina Showcase party with Capo & Comes. I have known him for his tech house style so it's refreshing to hear his take on the deep house sound, mixing it up deep techno style. Keep a listen out for one of my favourite tracks, ''All I want'' (Mike Vale)on the podcast.
Enjoy!!
With the Deep House series, I am hoping to show what I find to be the different takes on this with the different mixtapes from the select guests in the UK & across the globe.

Been a while since the last episode but welcome back.

Enjoy!!

Over to Dj Pete Tuguntke. I have been following him from the days of when DJS@WORK on the facebook was fairly new. He was renowned for being the co promoter for club nite Kiki in Farringdon and presently one of the resident djs at La Divina Afterhours. Refreshing how he fuses the deep with the tech and techno flava hence the journey on this mixtape is pretty intense ;-)
Been a while since the last episode of the Series but a massive thanks for all the good feedback with ep13 with Aldana. Now to continue we have Dj Arijit Sen in the deep house corner. Arijit is renowned for playing his underground, tech house, techno sound at club night, Nocturned at the Ministry of Sound London and so for me it's wicked to see his take on deep house here. Look out for the ol skool house sound echoed across this mixtape and particularly with the wicked lyrics and vocals on the tracks 'Found It' and also to one of my favourite tracks from yesteryear, 'Take Me Away'.
Massive thanks Ari ;-)

Welcome to ep12 of the Deep House Series.

And now for something more closer to home. We are off to the south coast. David Ethics has been a Dj/Promoter/Producer since the mid 90’s. He is renown for his residencies at Dirty Sunset Disco and his own club night Rebel Rabble in Brighton.

Really nice to hear how he links deep house with deep tech, tech house, techno and wait for it nu disco & this is reflected in the journey he takes with this mixtape.

2015 looks set to be a busy year what with his coming summer season residencies, a record label launch and production projects. His track ‘Human Behaviour’ is due for release on EB Records in February 2015 and will be available on Beatport.

From the end of January he will be hosting his weekly ‘Rebel Rabble Radio’ show on Brighton’s brand new online and FM station Trickstar. The show is scheduled for every Wednesday from 6 to 8pm. News, updates and details will be posted via Facebook and Twitter, so stay tuned.
Now over to Igualada, Spain with Angel Cocodil. He is an established dj, producer and also label owner of Sandy Records. His sound is house music and in the main from deep house to tech house. He is known for playing at the infamous Club Row, L'Atlantida Sitges, Club Rain Amsterdam, Pacha Sitges Bali ar, Buddha Amsterdam club to name a few.
What I love about this mixtape on the Deep House Series is his personal touch on the ol' skool sound.
Now over to Igualada, Spain with Angel Cocodil. He is an established dj, producer and also label owner of Sandy Records. His sound is house music and in the main from deep house to tech house. What I love about this mixtape on the Deep House Series is his personal touch on the ol' skool sound.

Apologies, it has been a little longer than I wanted to get this episode up but here we are.

Gerald Henderson is an established dj. producer and label owner of Bongo Tones. When you talk of his sound to me it is all about the groove with his fusion flava of percussion, tribal, afro, tech, latin beats. This is reflected on his take with the deep house sound. Gros merci from moi, 'no touf' ;-)

This episode is dedicated to my Lady Pascale, 'mere du lapin blanc', who I am proud to say shares my love of everything that is deep, everything that is house!
With the Deephouse series, I am hoping to show the different takes on this with the different mixtapes from the select guests in the UK & across the globe.

And now as promised, the 2nd instalment from Zach Burns. Last month I mentioned this would be a liittle personal to me. Am proud to say Zach Burns was responsible for kicking off the 1st guest mix, https://soundcloud.com/matinales/djs-work-mix-1-interview-with?in=matinales/sets/djs-work-mix-series ;-)

It has been amazing to see him go from strength to strength but the one thing that has stayed is his passion and love for the house. Now as I did say the Deephouse series is all about showing the different sounds of deep house as we know it and Zach Burns does just that with his infusion of the deeper rather than just deep with tech and tribal house influences, almost verging near the end to deep techno and yet when you are listening the bpm stays around the 124 mark. Love it, enjoy it!

Welcome to ep06 of the Deep House series.

Deep house as a subgenre of house music is pretty massive. It is said to originate in the 1980's from Chicago. Generally when we talk of deep house, you woulld expect the bpm to be between 120 & 130. With the Deephouse series, I am hoping to show the different takes on this with the different mixtapes from the select guests in the UK & across the globe.

The next two instalments are a little personal to me as these djs have been with me since I started the https://soundcloud.com/matinales/sets/djs-work-mix-series in 2011.

So the 1st instalment is from dj/producer, Tom Nikso, who is a resident Dj at Scream Paris. We met thru a mutual friend, Bertrand. Again his sound verges on techno, tech and a hint of progressive house, so it was a privilege for Tom to do the https://soundcloud.com/matinales/djs-workmix-2-interview-with?in=matinales/sets/djs-work-mix-seriesdo but he didn't rest his laurels there. Then came the https://soundcloud.com/tomniksomusic/sets/deep-poems. To this day I tell him that it is still one of my favourites of time ;-)

So to this mix. What to expect? Hopefully, you will enjoy the light velvety sound to dark dulcet beats nearing the end.

Dedicated and in memory of Bertrand who opened my eyes to the deep house...merci

Deep house as a genre is pretty massive. With the Deephouse series, I am hoping to show a different take on this with the different mixes from the select guests.

This time round we have Salome Calvino. Originally from France, now residing in London. I first came across Salome at the Groovebox party for La Divina & loved the fresh sound coming from her. Immediately, I thought why not transfer this onto a deephouse tip! !What I like about this sound is how she fuses the deep house ol' skool house with fresh new beats, keeping it distinct.

Welcome to the Deephouse Series. To be honest, have a real weakness for the deephouse sound so thought it was time to have a series dedicated to it

Starting with the deephouse series is Thomas Wonderland.

Have to admit I have been trying to get Thomas to do a guest mix for quite some time now...hmmm two years since his last podcast on the DJS@WORK Mix 7 but well worth the wait.

Thomas Wonderland is the brainchild behind La Divina in London @ Union Club. The La Divina concept has gone from strength to strength with the La Divina presents...which showcases not only the djs but also the record label.

Recently, I have been listening to the sound of Thomas Wonderland and loving the sound coming from him right now. To top it off he manages to put his unique style into deephouse bringing you 'Deeper in Wonderland'

Deep house as a subgenre of house music is pretty massive. It is isaid to originate in the 1980's from Chicago. Generally when we talk of deep house, you woulld expect the bpm to be between 120 & 130. With the Deephouse series, I am hoping to show the different takes on this with the different mixtapes from the select guests.

Now I have been following Dj Lady Saxalott for quite some time & been pretty impressed with her flava mainly with tech house but also recently with the deep tech house sounds, a nice fusion of traditional deep house with the tech house sound.
