“I went to this… place,” she said, by way of conversation. “It changed me entirely.”

He walked silently beside her for a few moments. “Was it a nice place?”

“Oh yes.” She smiled. “Oh yes, it was lovely. They take everything old from you and exchange it for something new. It was… it was lovely.”

“I see.”

“Yes, it was a good place. A very good place.”

He continued walking beside her, staring at their feet.

She walked with a light step - too light, almost. As though there was nothing to weigh her down, nothing to bind her to this earth.

He looked up almost savagely. “Then why are you - like this?”

“It was a very good place,” she said wistfully, almost dreamily. “A lovely place.” Then she looked at him. “But I think they forgot to give me a heart.”
