There's no real other theme than summer heat really. these are a collection of my fave tunes for the sunshine. some are twenty years old, some i only heard about last week. there's deep house, lounge (i know, but i still like it), funk, trance and who knows what else. it's not a mix for a purist, but it's pretty good fun, and i reckon it would get your garden party bopping.

Anyway, it posed an interesting question. How do you make a 3 hour mix which maintains the right tempo for running, but doesn't dictate or override the runner's natural behaviour? After much thought, I settled on a selection of tunes that had lots of things in common - a driving beat, longer than 7mins each, with a strong build and plateau. And where possible, vocals to keep the runner singing along.

It was a really interesting challenge to face. I ended up looking back towards lots of tunes i'd bought or first heard between 2000 and 2005, where tempos were higher than a lot of the music i listen to today. I also needed tunes that would suit a longer blend than you might use in a party scene, since I reckoned you wouldn't want to disrupt the rhythm of the runner. I also wanted to throw in a couple of happy tunes, in amongst the chug, in order to bring the runner up if they were struggling. Hopefully they don't seem anachronistic.

Barring one or two mixes which I wish I could go back and fix, I'm pretty happy with what's emerged from a single effort. I might go back and try sort the levels but I'm not sure if i do a whole other three hours it will be any better - so here it is for your delectation. all you runners out there, keep reaching for that rainbow!

I was recently asked to play at a friend's party in the beautiful villa elia. On my return, the host asked me if i could do a mix of some of the best tunes of the night. So here it is - nothing spectacular in terms of new tracks - just fun tunes for people wanting to have a good night.

I've tried to recreate the same conditions as the party, ie, drunk as hell, no planning the set, no fiddling afterwards with the levels, no fiddling before with the beatgridding. so this mix isn't one for the pure djs, but it's one for people who like to dance around a lot.

For those lucky people who were at the villa elia, I played all these songs, but perhaps not in this order. I've tried to keep the spirit of that special night alive. I hope you like it

I conceived it as a mix to get you home after a festival - lots of melody and chill to begin with while you're in the car park; then some more bouncy stuff for the a roads, followed up by something to keep you awake and a solid chunk of driving classics to get you down the motorway at speed. As Withnail said, "I'm making time!"

Nothing particularly obscure or modern, just some of the tunes i've been getting into or getting back into over the last few months.

a couple of bits and pieces not perfect, but "n'enculons pas les mouches" eh.
