Dr Heisenberg's final decision

Today, the 20th of October 2012, I'm very proud to present my fourth soundscape: Dr Heisenberg's final decision. To my knowledge this 50-minute piece is the longest yet to be composed, mixed and produced using only an iPhone and an iPad. No additional flavouring. On this day two years ago I released Last train to Vienna. The first album in the world entierly composed, mixed and produced on an iPhone.

I began working on Dr Heisenberg's final decision on January 8th, according to my music diary. For nearly two months I kept on working using my iPhone. But at the end of February I finally got an iPad. It was a huge investment for me, but I have to say the migration is paying off.

There has been a big leap forward, compared to my three inital soundscapes, Shopping Cart Romance (2011), The Tail(e)s and Mysteries of Electric Elephants (2011) and Lullaby for sleepy Nanobots (2012).

Firstly, my knowledge of the amazing NanoStudio has grown. A fuller grasp of the possibillities it offers helps me expand and nurture the creative process uninterupted.

Secondly, the development on the app market has been amazing for the last 12 months. So for this piece I used not only the Eden synth in Nanostudio but also Alchemy, Sunrizer, Instant drummer and Stochastic drum machine.

Thirdly, this is the first of my soundscapes that uses percussion as an important part.

As with the previous soundscapes I divided it into scenes of five minutes and Dr Heisenberg's final decision comprises of ten individual scenes.

The theme and the start of everything was three choir like themes created in Sunrizer. This foundation can be heard all the way through. Along with this main theme there is a four note theme played at the beginning of the first scene that reoccurs throught the scenes in different shapes.

Both themes are very simple and the purpose of using simple themes and combinations of tones appeal to me. To create emotions with subtle means, without being speculative.

As for the future I will continue to create ambient soundscapes. I like to keep things pure and to the point. That's why I don't use any wires or computers when composing. Just my iPad and my apps. My setting at the moment is NanoStudio as the DAW. My main apps are Magellan, Sunrizer and Alchemy.

At the moment I work on my fifth soundscape, Morphogenetic Fields. The release is planned for spring 2013. As an experiment I decided to blog about the creation of this piece and the fact of being an iOS musician. You can follow all of this on niclastamas.com.
