I remember long days and balmy nights. The scent of eucalyptus, the calls of songbirds. We ate real food and sang real songs.

I remember short days, bitter winds and ice. The forest echoed with the lonely hoots of owls and wolves prowled the long dark. We drank foul liquor to still the aching emptiness of our bellies and cowered in stinking tents, weeping.

I remember days of plenty, and days of need. Days of sorrow and nights of joy. Grey skies and blue. Nothing holding me when I held you.

These aren't my memories, but I cling to them anyway. Even the bad ones. Heartbreak and torment, weariness and death. Even the thinnest recollections of another person's ancient stinging defeat have more substance and detail than any actual life now.

We have always lived at the bitter end, spending our interminable existences gazing wistfully back at long-gone and barely-remembered ages of change, of progress, of hope. Nostalgic for a future that's all in the past.

It's over. Everything is over. It's been over for so long. Why can't it just fucking *stop*?

13 1 second fragments, of 1-13 midi notes respectively, were thrown together in Cubasis, roughly in a C major chord, then the patterns replicated in F, G and (with some interval fudging) Am. A deck of cards was shuffled and dealt up at ~1 card per second, recording the sound via the iPad built-in mic. The midi patterns were ordered according to the sequence of cards (suit determining the chord, face value determining the notes). This sequence was then piped to NLog Pro, Magellan and bs16-i in turn, recording their output into AudioShare via IAA. (This might have been better done directly in Cubasis, but by this point I'd grown to hate that app.) The four recordings were then layered together in Auria with a few effects and some volume automation.

Results are not necessarily musical, but hey, it's an experiment. And at least it's short.

Quasi-old school track for the Asstronica Jumble Sale Challenge.

Sounds mostly from the original iPhone TechnoBox, plus some droning from Oramics and some incongruous clunks from BeatMaker (again the pre-iPad version 1). Audio was run from the iPhone's headphone jack into an iRig HD guitar interface and recorded onto the iPad with AudioShare. The recordings were then slapped together in Auria with a bit of FX added because I couldn't resist.

The Oramics app was really the one I wanted to include most, but couldn't really get enough out of it to be the main element -- or was too lazy to do so, anyway. It's basically a toy, but a fun one, capturing a little bit of the bonkers experimental spirit of Daphne Oram. (Anyone who finds themselves in London in the near future should definitely check out the remnants of her machine at the Science Museum -- I think it's still on show, for the next couple of weeks at least...)

Is this, at last, the moment of clarity, where it all finally makes sense? Does hindsight bequeath a shape to all this, to all that's happened and all we've done, a narrative that we can look upon and comprehend? And say:
Yet it stands as a monument to its old power, a relic of a bygone age of ambition and achievement and engineered magnificence. An age of possibility, which is so hard to imagine now. You could go somewhere, back then; there was somewhere to go.

A few old men gather in its long shadow, sometimes, like mournful ghosts drawn back to places that had meaning when they were alive. And I guess I'm one of them, though I never saw it working, never saw those wheels turn. Probably neither did they.
I know it feels as if the end is nigh, but I've come to realise that's just an illusion. Ending would be a change, and nothing changes anymore.

(2006)". Image stolen from the larger-scale original. My music, needless to say, has bugger all to do with either.

Something with this title and roughly this shape was originally intended to appear as an interlude in Happy Days, between 'The Price of Everything' and 'What We're Fighting For'. It got circumstantially supplanted by 'Nostalgia for a future that's all in the past', and as a result pretty much fell by the wayside until this week's drunken noodling reminded me. Maybe I'll retrofit it. Maybe not. (You are not expected to care about any of this.)

Gadget and ToneStack are a bloody excellent combination, by the way. In case you were wondering. (This track doesn't do either justice.)
