Connoisseur of all things deep and beautiful. Khutšo Chuma has been involved in music literally from childhood, having learnt music production by the age of 17. The passion for music breathed heavily inside him through his young adult life, and by age 19, he had taught himself the art of mixing and started playing at various different venues before landing residence at LiquidChefs (Rosebank). His passion for vinyl drove him in the direction of DJ Yme who helped him master the art of playing vinyl and he has never looked back since. To this day, Khutšo quietly collects the best of deep house records, almost exclusively playing vinyl at gigs and events.

As a child, George’s favourite toys were cassette tapes. His older sister’s interest in Disco music also played an important part on his ongoing love for soulful dance music. By 1987, he was influenced by the legendary “Flamingo” Disco club in Zurich, which it possibly was one of the first European clubs dedicated purely to House music. From that year, George begun to buy vinyl records and today he is well known for his in-depth background and huge knowledge of House & Disco music. Dan Piu’s record collection is extensive and it contains well over 10,000 records. By the late 80´s, already known as a collector on the “vinyl scene”, he started deejaying at different clubs in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Encouraged by the success as a resident DJ in the hottest Zürich clubs ‘2. Akt’ and ‘Toni Molkerei’, he also started to produce his own tracks on his self-founded labels “No Acting Vibes” and “Motomusic”. By using a variety of analogue synthesizers and analogue effects, Dan Piu’s productions are known for its pure and warm sounds. “The Shine EP” released in 1996, was followed by the “Limitless Expanses EP”, the “Innercity Terror EP” and the “Quenchy EP”. These were not only the result of his passion for working with machines, but also a homage to the DJ’s (Freddy Fresh, Terry Hunter, Jeff Mills, Todd Sines, Carl Craig) who included George’s productions on their Top Charts. In 2006, he created “deepArtSounds“ (a mix-podcast platform for local DJ’s). In 2011, alongside Okan Akpinar and his former Label partner Roberto Pistolese, he launched deepArtSounds as a vinyl label, releasing deep and soulful house music by loads of international artists, as well as his own productions under the Project Name “Allstarr Motomusic”. In 2014 he contributed with his song “Little Trinidadian Girl” on Ernie’s Top Label Minuendo. One year later in 2015, his debut EP “Beauty & Simplicity Vol. 1” was released on “Deep Explorer”. Very quickly it found the recognition of one of his musically idols: Ron Trent, who also released under his label later on, as well as other renowned producers as Glenn Underground and Anthony Nicholson, among others. Dan Piu aka George is undoubtedly a sound aesthete. His sets are particularly emphasised by long mixes and quick changes through several music styles. They burst with energy and personality, and are aimed at the dancefloor without losing sight of their fundamental sound values. George has played since the early 90´s at festivals and clubs such as “Rohstofflager”, “Toni Molkerei”, “Hive”, “Limmathaus”, “Streetparade”, “Club Q”, “2. Akt” and 4. Akt” in Zurich, Kantine Club in Ravensburg (Germany), “Club Stone”, “Cafe Berlin”, “Rauch Club”, “Cuba Club”and “Conrad Sohm Club” in Austria, “A1 Store” in New York City, “Studio 76”, “Siroco” and “El Amante” in Madrid… among others. George is also known as Filmmaker. He has launched his Music Documentary about the deep House scene in Madrid: “Exploring Madrid”.
<itunes:summary>As a child, George’s favourite toys were cassette tapes.

A wonderful addition to our mix series from a veteran of the deep , Justin Slack . He began DJ’ing in Cape Town in the mid-90s, holding long-time residencies at the Function, Rhythm Divine and The Lounge as well as playing at a wide range of events. He was London-based Best Kept Secret’s Cape Town resident for many years, playing a weekly 5-hour set that crossed genres from hip hop to broken beat to deep house and anything in between. Semi-retired and still only playing vinyl he has featured over the last few years at Vinyl Digz and We House Sundays amongst other events. In 2016 he joined the HEAR collective a group of DJs and visual artists who run monthly events in Cape Town.

"I've also enjoyed doing opening sets and I wanted the mix to reflect something like that - building things for a night but also having some peaks and trough. I also wanted it to reflect some history so the newest track is very current while the oldest is from 1992. Finally it is a good reflection of what you might hear at hEAR our monthly night in Cape Town. It doesn't have to be banging for people to have a good time "

Hi diggers

We are very proud to present an Exclusive mix from Eddie C. Raised in Southern Ontario somewhere between Detroit and Montreal, Eddie C began his experiments in music some time in the late 80s. Inspired first by Hip Hop and the burgeoning Acid House scene, he began making tape edits of late night radio and shortly thereafter began visiting record shops and warehouse parties to discover the music first hand. Record collecting has since been a way of life for the man, followed closely by an opposing passion for skiing which lead him to his 10 year sabbatical in the Rocky Mountains of Canada. With plenty of time over the past decade for reflection and research in his log cabin studio, C has recently re-located and reconnected with the electronic music community in Berlin. His raw yet sophisticated approach to production has yielded countless releases and remixes since just 2009 and his now renowned eclectic and passion-fueled DJ sets have garnered a cult following world wide.

Eddie C could well be described as one of the Slo Mo/ Edits/ Disco scene's heaviest hitters. In just over three years he's featured on or been the main attraction with over 25 original EPs and singles and countless remixes. Having graced labels like Jiscomusic, Endless Flight, Crue-L, Sleazy Beats, Wolf Music, 7 Inches of Love & Home Taping, amongst others, with his deep, lush and beautiful grooves, C is constantly name checked by every major playa this end of the underground. In 2011 he released his first full length album "Parts Unknown" on Endless Flight and later that year began releasing new projects on his own Red Motorbike imprint. The fact is, the guy hardly needs an introduction.

Hi diggers !

The latest instalment of the Coquette series comes courtesy of DJ Rahaan.

Rahaan has been dropping disco and funky house beats to retro music heads since the 80’s when he and his friends use to dance at the best house parties in Chicago – Rahaan’s home state and most importantly, the place which gave birth to House music.

Playing at house parties in Chicago obviously done Rahaan some good, as he is now a successful DJ and music producer in his own right. He recently released Rahaan Edits Vol. 1 and 2 in 2008/9 on Stillove4music record label as well as putting out some remixes on the KAT record label.

The thing about Rahaan is that he defiantly knows his art, and it is his outstanding skill behind the decks that has brought him from the Chicago underground circuit out onto the international playing field of Japan, Australia, Amsterdam, Spain, Ireland, Scotland, England, throughout America.

But before Rahaan made his presence on the global dance floor, Rahaan was playing his music from his cassette tapes with his dance crew called the Chuck Brothers. He then moved to the state of Wisconsin whereby he started to grow a serious collection of disco and house records. In 1996 Rahaan moved back to Chicago started hanging out with his old friends, forming the reunion of the Chuck Brothers once again.

During the 90’s Rahaan was building up his reputation as one of Chicago’s finest Disco/House DJ, playing at a hot club called “The Spot” and the infamous loft parties with Mr.Bill, Pee Wee and friends. This opened the door for Rahaan to perform on guest spots for Sisterz of Vision and Soul In The Hole club nights, followed by a residency “Budda Lounge” – one of Chicago’s best nightclubs.

In the year 2000 Rahaan started producing tracks for his own personal collection but this soon gained him the attention of Fourplay records who signed him up straight away. His first major track releases on this label were ‘Coming Hard’ and “No Time for Love.”

Since then, Rahaan has released numerous mixes on various websites such as Deep House and Bring The Heat, which gained him attention from other record labels and music lovers across the world. His performances have included the Southport Weekender, Northern Soul and Bring The Heat parties, which you can view on the website.

In between touring Rahaan is busy producing soulful disco and house music for Australian singer Christine Eva and Atlanta based singer/songwriter Ozara Ode’. It is fair to say that Rahaan is well and truly on his way to accomplishing bigger and better things for the year ahead.

This week's addition to our guest mix series comes from New Jersey based Joey Anderson. He launched his label Inimeg Recordings in early 2011. His first release on the label Organisms, featuring longtime comrade DJ Qu garnered a welcoming response from media outlets across the globe including RA and Concepto Radio. Anderson’s previously released tracks Dive Deep, Thee Analysis and Oval alongside his Exchange Place crew ignited an interest that is continuing to burgeon. With deep roots in the underground House Music scene of New York City as a masterful dancer, Joey Anderson’s evolution to producer, DJ and label owner were almost inevitable. His latest release We Are Not Alone with industry fav Jus-ED is a strong cohesive follow up to his premiere release. Moody vibes juxtaposing intergalactic intonations mixed with deep rhythmic consciousness, encompass Anderson’s sound.

Summer 2012 will mark Anderson’s first official debut to the European market as he plays the highly coveted Free Rotation festival in London. Domestically Anderson has played various underground parties like Sound Noir, Boundless and Clubhouse. And continues to collaborate with various artists and labels like Fabric London, Soul People Music, Levon Vincent, Finale Sessions and Deconstruct, Dekmantel , Latency ++

2013 saw joey’s star rise with a lot of praise and support from the press and dancers alike and an increased demand for music by labels and and an increased demand for dj sets internationally.

Hi diggers

This week, We are extremely honored to have the legendary Mike Grant on our guest mix series .

At the end of the 1990s, Mike Grant re-emerged as one of the leading figures in Detroit’s growing house scene after spending the majority of the decade and late ‘80s pursuing other ambitions. When Grant’s fresh Moods & Grooves label began raising more than a few eyebrows with its catalog of releases by many of Detroit’s best house producers, few knew that he has been a key figure in the Motor City’s early to mid-‘80s electronic dance scene as a talented DJ. Grant is one of the few Detroit DJs who plays complete deep house/house or techno sets as well as a mixture. While traveling throughout Europe Grant earned the distinction as being the first American DJ to have a residency at Tresor Club in Berlin.

Grant’s musical career began at an early age, influenced by Detroit’s fledging music scene and his uncle, the general manager at a local R&B/dance radio station, WKWM. By 1980, the young Grant had joined a DJ collective known as Men of Music while becoming close friends with schoolmate Blake Baxter. Baxter showed Grant the art of beat mixing while the two made mix tapes after school, and Grant eventually joined Baxter’s DJ group, The Beat Sound Company. A few years later in 1983, Grant was scoring club residencies in Detroit alongside legends such as Ken Collier and also managed to make appearances on The Scene, a video dance show on WGPR alongside even more local DJs such as Jeff Mills.

During this mid-‘80s era, Grant’s reputation as one of the city’s top DJs led to eventual friendships and partnerships with many of that eras other top DJs, most notably Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May, and Juan Atkins. During the summer of 1985, he became a member of Detroit’s first radio mix show, “Street Beat,” where the foundation for what would later become early Detroit techno was ultimately formed. Prior to the Street Beat show, Grant made a commitment to join the military not knowing what doors would eventually open.

During this time in the military, he continued to DJ on the base and in Seattle, where he introduced the sounds of Detroit techno to the unsuspecting West Coast.
Following his time in the military, Grant then studied telecommunications in Chicago and began his career in this same field, while occasionally returning to his hometown for the occasional performance.

In the late ‘90s, Grant planned his return, beginning with a recording as Black Noise on Metroplex Records, titled “Nature of the Beast.” Rather than just DJ and produce tracks, he went to the lengths of starting his own label, Moods & Grooves, and began releasing the work of his peers as well as his own. By mid-2000, the label had received substantial acclaim – including a high-profile appearance by Grant at the landmark Detroit Electronic Music Festival. In 2001 Grant launched the techno based label End to End and urban sounding Afrosyntrix. Recent accomplishments include remixing the Detroit classic “Sharevari,” being selected to perform at Midem’s Electronic Showcase, selection and participation in DEMF/Movement, and inclusion to the “Techno – Detroit’s Gift To the World” exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum.

Hey everyone !

We are proud to present you this mix from our Madrid special guest José Manuel Alvarez, also known as Dubbyman.

Dj and vinyl collector since the end of the 80´s, very influenced by the early electro and funk movement and grown up with the scene that was around him, mainly in his own town where the music environment was full of music because the American base installed in the 80´s. A town that even had their own funk temple, a super disco called Stones that was the own and personal “Paradise Garage” for him and so many other dj's, dancers and music lovers in general. Funny that he couldn't enter inside because his age, but that is another story). Well, we could say that he is one of those guys that was witness of the wake of the early use of the machines into funk and disco that later it became in what we know nowadays as House music.

Many mix-tapes for friends and a couple of “situations” (we can´t call them “gigs” yet..) selecting music from his little collection and he realized in the middle of the 90´s and almost by accident that to play records for people is what he wanted to do and the feeling was strong enough to going deeper about collecting and play records in public as Dj Vertice as temporary name.

After several visits to local clubs spreading a combination of funk, break-beats, house, dub, drum& bass and basically anything with groove in that freestyle way how he was educated, the life made one of those unusual turns and he starts to work in 2011 as resident DJ in Freak, an underground party that was located in Stones, the club where he couldn't enter when he was a teenager.

In 2002 he starts releasing music under the name Dubbyman, mixing dub reggae music with house influenced by San Francisco scene and labels like Grayhound and Workship records. In 2003 he creates with his little brother Javier (knowed as Above Smoke) their own record label called Deep Explorer, a platform to develop not only their own music but music from undiscovered artists like Anton Zap, Lady Blacktronica, Leo Gunn to name just a few.
But the label also have space for well recognized artists like Larry Heard, Ron Trent, Mike Huckaby, Kai Alce..and the list goes on and on.

Around 2004 he started a new project as a new residency in Sybaris Club, a lounge café where he could experience even more into jazz, soul and other genres in a chilled way unconstrained for the dance floor. In the meantime, he combines the lounge club with gigs for European clubs and goes two consecutive years to Sonar Festival (Barcelona) where he finds the most highly recognition , doing the warm up for Fat Freddy´s Drop mixing in a powerful way, dub and urban music in a powerful way. and sharing the booth with Kode 9 and Mary Anne Hobbes in his the second round.

In 2010 the people from Freerotation, the most underground festival until date called him to play two days join artists like Juju & Jordas, Jus-Ed, XDB or Sven weisemann between many more.

In 2011 Dubby fly to Chicago attending the call of Bjak, one of the usual artists on Deep Explorer, for a full tour where he played with artists like Specter (Tetrode music), Julio Bishop (Realdeeprecords), Brian Gardner (Soul foundation) and Daryl Cura (Eargasmic recordings)

2014 was a really important year as it represents his first contact with the South African people playing for them. An amazing and really hard travel which made him to visit more than 5 cities in one week playing for clubs and giving a masterclass for Red Bull Studios in Johannesburg. The South African tour was a complete success and it really touched his heart to keep on doing music and playing for their followers.

Nowadays he still running the label Deep Explorer Music. After more than fifty records released between Eps and remixes, he is about to release his first album in 2016.

Hey everyone !

We are proud to present you this mix from London based producer Cedric Sabras.

Cedric Sabras, known as Monsieur Cedric, is French but prefers to be called a "world citizen" after living in no less than ten different countries.

He loves music, any kind of music, as long as it sounds good. He has been playing house and techno since the early 90, but also really love to spin any kind of music related to jazz or disco; which means pretty much everything. He collects records: bossa nova, funk, new-wave, Chicago house, Detroit techno, Japanese fusion jazz, Italian 60s & 70s soundtracks... Whenever he enters a used records shop, he will dig almost every crate!
