DJ SID - A State Of Mind EP

Review of DJ SID 'A State Of Mind EP' By Jonny 'Acid' Armstrong

Coming soon on TYT Records.

After the labels relaunch , all must be well and good aboard the H.M.S UK44. So good the guys
have decided to relaunch one of UK44's sister labels TYT (Teach Yourself Techno, for those who
didn't know what the acronym stood for). As was the first single on the UK44 relaunch, the TYT Records reemergence will be provided by yet another debutant to one of their cluster of
associated labels. The two track 'A State Of Mind EP' by 34 year old Merseysider DJ SID. His first
ever release on any label and by Lordy its a proper little corker! Believe you me (would I lie?).
The first song and title track 'A State Of Mind' is a fullon energetic rush from start to end. Some very clean sounding production and a high level of technical ability shown had Jonny eating a
large order of 'impressed' with a side order of 'Yeah man, I like that!'. The closest thing i can
compare it to is like Paul Van Dyke on a Cocaine high. Honest its that good! Imagine a PVD track +1520bpm your on the right track. It kicks off with a full on NRG beat before building to the breakdown. Plenty of swoosh sounds and 'For An Angelesque' key stabs, then high pitched
squelch like noises instead of the usual snare drum rolls. A quick whip! like sound leads to a
excellent and clear sample of a posh futuristic lady telling us all to open our minds, be at balance etc etc. Then its showtime with some funky bass tweaks and a hands up riff that keeps pushing and pushing, that would make Judge Jules think damn I should play a bit harder sets. The break carries on but doesn't make your attention sway, then boom its fullon proper banging that'll have any crowd going mental. Me personally would have liked some low end sounding aggressiveness further into the track, not saying there is anything wrong just its a perfect track for a remix to give it a total different aspect and would accompany the original nicely. Food for thought there Mick!

The second track titled 'The Dark Side' again blew little Jonny's socks off! Another storming and excellently produced 6mins of top quality hardtrance floorfilling turntable fodder, guaranteed to do what it is says on the tin! This track has a more Ibiza feel to it, conjuring up images of lying on the beach whilst being swept along on a tsunami of sound. This is the track I personnally keep having another listen to and I'm continually more impressed with DJ SID's skills in the studio. Another similarly pitched stomper that builds to a crescendic breakdown, with more wooshes aplenty and well thought out song structure to deliver optimal effect. Both tracks stand well in their original state and hold their own against many a seasoned producers offerings.
Overall an excellent choice to bring TYT out again and dust itself off in a new world, where a
bit of the old coupled with the pinch new makes for a flirtatious affair. DJ SID, remember the name he's one to watch!
