Every good DJ needs a good record store behind them. And so it was certainly the case for me, back in the good old days, where I could easily spend an entire afternoon in one, happily listening to records on a battered 1210.
What was also fortunate for me was that Three Shades records, a record store in Birmimgham, hidden away on Needless Alley just off New Street, was a 2 minute work from where I was working at the time. This resulted in me spending a hell of a lot of my lunch hours (and money) in there.

From that I forged a pretty good friendship with the owner, who happens to have an extremely good taste in music, very similar to my own. And when that happens you end up having loads of good records shoved under your nose from the moment you walk in. He'd pick 'em; I'd mix 'em.

Of course, it wasn't just getting the good music that made it great. There would always be regulars that'd drop in and chat about music, football or just any other rubbish going. Record stores really were a central place for the DJing community to congregate and geek out on some quality music. To honest, I even found myself behind the till a couple of times. The digital era of record stores has ruined all this, along with the absolute beauty a shimmering slab of vinyl is.... but hey ho.

As with most of the independent record stores, Three Shades closed it's doors late 2006. But many of the people from there are still friends, still chat, and still meet up where we can.
Ironically, it is a hearing aid shop now. So I'll probably be popping in there again, once I've ruined my ears with loud music.

And with that, I dedicate the 4th installment of my classic mixes to that store. To those memories. To those friendships.

Mart, Paul... and everyone else who worked in there, or just popped in, this 4.5 hour epic is for you.
