I originally uploaded this on Soundcloud in April 2013 (seems like eons ago, so much has happened) when I was only about 14 weeks new into this. But I've learned so much more about mixing and producing music since then - making it up as I went along, but realising soon along the way that I must have a good ear (just the one) for doing this side of music too, not just writing and playing. So I eventually had to come back to this piece of gorgeousness from Megan (who might be just about 18 now). The original recording of Megan and her acoustic guitar, in her bedroom, I imagine this... shitty mobile phone on 'record' lying carelessly on the floor, inside a smelly, lint-laden, balled-up sock, further obstructed from achieving sonic perfection by a can of coke and yesterday's take-away box, both also on the floor. Well, that recording is still up here on my Soundcloud page, and is still beautiful. Have a listen. But I wanted to bring her natural, innocent yet wise and timeless sounding voice up more in the mix. A bit more clarity. So I've carefully tried to clean it up, probably a better phrase is 'to restore it'. I hope this works - I'm not a fan of over-polishing stuff. It can make music sterile if it's note-perfect and 'technically' perfect. So maybe all I've done is restored a masterpiece. I can say that without conceit because it's not my song - Megan wrote, sang, played and recorded it. And what a poignant and haunting song about the pain of a love lost, by one so young. A piece of art.
So, Megan on vocals and acoustic guitar, David Augustin on upright bass...and me, I just added some Snaithyliciousness to it with samples and virtual instruments, it didn't need my guitars on this. I hope those of you who have heard it before like this version too and if you have never heard it before I hope you all enjoy it and, as I've said in the past, can get through the rough sonic quality of Megan's recording to see the diamond within.
