With The Hermit’s new album, everything is about the number 4: the four elements – fire, water, earth, air – each represented through four tracks on an album that closes with “Abyss”, a mystical final track and psychedelic ambient journey into nowhere. The 16 tracks leading up to this finale expose The Hermit’s trademark sound consisting of dark post-industrial EBM references, early rave memories and contemplative synth improvisations, a hybrid which reminds not least of the legendary Analogue Bubblebath-series. But something is different this time: without any doubt, „Liber 4“ comes across as the most mature piece of work in The Hermit’s oeuvre so far. While his earlier works often had a sketchy appeal to them, apparently struggling to focus on one of the many ideas The Hermit brought to the table, his new tracks demonstrate a much more confident drive towards a singular goal for each of the highly diverse tracks, which finally are spelled out in all consequence until the very end. A track like “Hermaphrodit” would have suited the likes of Robert Görl and Gabi Delgado, “There Is” sounds like the early AFX sharing a cigarette with Front 242 in a chillout room somewhere during the 90s, while the sci-fi ambient funk of “Equation” reminds of the likes of Kenny Larkin. The Hermit’s works always used to be very diverse and mind-blowingly full of ideas. What’s new here: each and every idea gets the space it deserves and is spelled out to perfection.

While The Hermit’s previous album „Liber 3“ still was concerned with the apparent dichotomy between life and death, his latest full-length release “Gate” picks up where “Liber 3” left off in order to take the next inevitable step. As the music of his new album brings the post-industrial electronica sound of his earlier works to full perfection, the album’s underlying theme and subject is the transition to a whole new spiritual level that has nothing in common anymore with the observable universe. There is one overarching question: What lies behind a symbol such as Ain Soph, the non-sefirot of the kabbalistic tree of life, when consciously climbing the infinite steps of Jacob’s ladder? Starting from C.G. Jung’s contemplation of the mundane ego’s psyche in the intro “Gate Keeper”, the album’s eight tracks in between ambient, glitchy electronica and post-industrial proto- and dub techno lead us on a journey which culminates in the final dissolution of the worldly ego, that is perfectly manifested through the album’s closing track “Totality”, a marching homage to teutonic EBM- and proto-techno from the likes of DAF. “Gate” is an album that – like all of The Hermit’s art – will resonate for a long time and will open new emotional and spiritual doors.

Following H.P. Blavatsky’s Secret Doctrine, “light and darkness are identical in themselves, being only divisible in the human mind“. To resolve such seeming antagonisms – between light and darkness, life and death – and to show that these in fact are just two sides of the same coin, these are the declared goals of The Hermits new album „Liber 3 – Dualism“. Dualism, seeming contrasts which nevertheless share the same area of conflict, are the overarching topic. Such conceptual approach and metaphysical references are reflected in The Hermit’s musical pluralism, combining influences from Ambient and Electronica to Detroit, Wave and Industrial, and turning them into a perfectly balanced and conclusive listening experience. The fact that huge contrasts are always very close to each other here is best bdemonstrated by „Funeral“, a title which didn’t exactly hint at the melodic, almost euphoric electronica hiding behind. The Hermit is Broque’s latest discovery, and is immersed in a fairly mystical aura, what extends as well to his new EP „Liber 1 – Metempsychosis“. As his music suggests, he is far from being a no-name and can look back already to a long and productive history in the Munich techno scene of the 90s. But for now, his past shall remain as mysterious as his music. After an extensive creative break throughout the past years, his recent EP marks not only a fresh start but also a complete turning point where everything that matters lies in the future, not in the past. “Liber 1” is filled with symbolism and transcendental references, most notably to occultism, kabbalah occultism and one of its most prominent masters, Aleister Crowley. At the same time it opens up a whole new musical microcosm formed out of dub, glitches, electronica and polyrhythmic hip hop. What sounds like an adventurous and mind-blowing combination of Adrian Sherwood, Autechre und King Tubby in fact surprises the listener with every single track. Still, the EP features a charming pop appeal, not least induced by a range of vocalists who bring in some indigenous grounding again. Each and every track tells its very own unfathomable yet engaging story and keeps revealing entirely new facets and storylines continuously. Luckily these stories did not come to an ending yet and we already are looking forward very much to their continuation as part of the upcoming “Liber 2 EP”
