Some songs come easy, some are a struggle. This was definitely a struggle.

I wrote and attempted to record ‘We Are The End Of Everything’ in 2009 but could never make it work. Although the writing came quickly, after 3 months I abandoned the recording. I could never get it right (levels were constantly out, the piano got lost in the mix, timing problems, the 4 part harmony was a bit too wild to control etc). Perhaps I'm lazy, but I generally try to record songs quickly otherwise I get lost in the detail. So what you hear is exactly where I left off. There has been no additional mixing.

It isn’t a train wreck, but it isn’t what I wanted it to be. Hopefully you can at least detect the DNA of a somewhat decent song. I think that maybe I was being a little too ambitious with the production. If anyone ever wants to take a stab at turning this into something I’d love to hear it.

As for the song itself, it is one of the few times where lyrics came before the music. I know a lot of people write that way but I need something to write to (I’m a musician, not a poet).

Basically, I was in a pretty bleak mood. It was meant to be summer in Melbourne but there was no summer to be found. It was cold and grey and the thought of going through another year without some sun was pretty depressing. Then one day I was sitting in a cafe reading a newspaper (remember those) and I realized that I had read it cover-to-cover without reading a single good news story. War in the Middle East, Global Financial Crisis, politics, flu in Mexico and worst of all my football team were looking to be hopeless in 2010 - hence the bleak song title.

As mentioned before, I love the combination of bleak lyrics and sweet music. When done well I love that casual listeners will only hear the tune, but those who delve deeper will find something a bit more rewarding. That was my goal with ‘We Are The End Of Everything’. I didn’t pull it off but my intentions were honorable.

I hope you enjoy.

LYRICS...

And in the end who will know?
If we lived / If we died
All our tears / all our joy
Will soon fade away with the deep summer sky

And in the end who will care
About what you thought and all you dreamed?
The lives that you touch - the life you had
You’ll find in the end no one gives a damn
No one gives a damn

Because...

We are the sand across the beach / we are a coin dropped in the street
We are the picture on the wall that students pass through empty halls
We are your beauty growing old / we are the years turning her cold
We are the closing of the bar / we never stopped and took in the stars
We are pain without relief / we are the animals that we eat
We will hate and we will love - but we will spend more time with hate
We can believe but can’t be sure / why talk of peace when we can talk of war
We are the end of everything...
We are the end of everything...

And in the end who will know?
Achievements high / adventures low
Matters of fact / inventions of fiction
Will soon turn their back like a young girl’s smile

Because...

We are the spaces between friends / we are the rift that never mends
We are the contact when you hit the floor / we are the sound from empty stalls
We are working without fair gain / we are civilians marched out in the rain
We are the blisters on your feet / we are your neighbor BLOCKING THE STREET!
We are the shotgun in his hands / don’t ‘Come As You Are’ – WE MAKE NO DEMANDS!
We are elections without real choice / now we’re online WE GIVE IDIOTS A VOICE!
We are the struggle of the poor / and although we ain’t certain OF THIS BE SURE!
We are the end of everything...
We are the end of everything...

Even when we come to nothing I will still love you.
