A quick one...

Ask any of my friends and they will all tell you that I am terrified of the sea. I'm not talking I don't like to get my hair wet. I'm talking scared out of my mind shark phobia.

Maybe I watched ‘Jaws’ when I was way too young, or maybe it’s the overwhelming sense of vulnerability I feel when in the water. Who knows? All I know is that to this day I will still not venture in beyond a certain depth. That said I have got better. Until a few years ago I wouldn't venture into the water at all. I'm probably the only Australian who doesn't like the ocean.

A song was always on the cards.

I can't exactly pinpoint when or where I recorded this song. Think it was 2007. What I do remember is that it was meant to be a sketch that I wanted to use as the basis for something much grander. Don’t know why I didn’t do more with it - it probably got lost. I have heaps of these “sketches” from over the years (my track ‘Going Down...’ is another example).

Given my fear, I don’t know how I ended up writing something so calm and tranquil. The music is very minimalist and is based around a simple repetitive riff. Various ambient effects can be heard as a backdrop. If you listen to my track ‘This Means Something...’ there are similarities. I guess I just wanted it to sound very meditative and tranquil even though the lyrics are fairly dark. There is probably a bit of Brian Eno in it like his classic 'Deep Blue Day' - I am huge fan.

Forgive the production as it was not intended to be a finished song. For instance there is obviously too much delay and treble on the vocals (I think I was trying to create a wave effect - cool idea in theory). That said, all in all I think it has something nice going for it.

Not really a song, not really a demo. Just a sketch of something that never was.

Hope you enjoy.

LYRICS:

Because you can’t take a chance with the sea
Drag you down to your death in the deep
Because you can’t take a chance with the sea
Drag you down to your death in the deep

It’s a shame that we had to part
It’s a shame that we had to part

Because you can’t take a chance with the sea
Drag you down to your death in the deep
Because you can’t take a chance with the sea
Drag you down to your death in the deep

It’s as deep as your deep heart
It’s as deep as your deep heart
