A bit of background.

This choral is a well-known part from Bach's St. Matthew Passion, written and first performed in 1727 in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, where Bach was the musical head. It's set for vocal soloists, two choirs, and two (small) orchestras on a text written by Picander. The whole passion is a very long piece, full of wonderful choirs and arias, sometimes dramatically mixed. O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden takes a bit over half a page in my study score, which has 306 pages in total.

The St Matthew Passion describes basically one day in the life of Christ, now called Good Friday, from the last supper until his death at the cross. The choral comes after the public beating of Christ and his crowning with a crown of thorns. The melody for this choral was not written by Bach.

I had a run/chase through a dark forest in mind, with a few turns and twists. Then an open place where the protagonist meets some resistance. Then there is a way out, not easy, but the light is visible, followed by escape to bright happy place. Unfortunately, not all is what it seems, and disaster strikes (hence the Epic Fail title). Something or someone gets lost, or perhaps even dies, and we must accept that that was inevitable. Resolution.
