When putting it together I decided very early on that I was going select tracks that people would not necessarily expect from me. Rather than go into the obscure realms of my record collection,like everyone would expect, I wanted to expose a bit of me. A person behind the "what the fuck are you playing now Bignell"

I asked myself, what would I want with me if I only had 8 records. Well, I would want familiar and easy tunes. I would want a tune that is a bit of fun and would pick me up, tunes that I could sing to (badly) late at night with a bottle of single malt, a track that I could dance to, a track that send shivers down my spine every time I hear it, a track to "rock out" to, tracks that take me back to a certain place in time and also a really, really,really personal track to remind me of loved ones departed. I leave you to guess which ones are which.

This mish-mash is just that. They are not my most favourite records, (that is a different thing entirely) it does not set out to be cool (it certainly isn't), its intended for my own entertainment across a number of emotions that I would want if I was stranded with only 8 records to play.

This is what it is all about for me. This is what me and Chris set out to acheive. Anyway, this is my take on it. As per usual I over think it. Would you expect any different from me?

I have wanted Neil to do this for some time but just not had the guts to ask him, massive thanks to Lee Fisher for making it happen. Neil is a massive Northern Soul nut, he is also responsible for bringing Techno to the UK. His compilaton Techno - The New Dance Sound of Detroit was a game changer for me as a spotted youth (as it was for many) and the follow up Techno 2 - The Next Generation got me well and truely hooked. Neil went on to form Network Records (legendary Midlands label) and the two Bio Rhythm Albums took me to a different level, also who can forget Nexus 21!

Anyway, to get Neil to do this was a delight. He actually passed me his 8 within 12 hours of agreeing to do it! For those that have done Desert Island Discs, its agonising process that takes weeks and weeks with lots of arguing with yourself, so this goes to show his knowledge of music and ability to craft a great, balance selection!

Between two suburban towns, in the middle of no mans land, deep in the Worcestershire countryside and on a canalside setting there was The Engine House. The only way to get there was by taxi, or by a "designated" driver. Then you had to get past Norman "The Doorman" and the team of doorstaff. However, once inside...

It was a club like no other, it was like a Jazz Club setting, split over 4 very intimate floors, the main club area, bar, social area and resturant (of sorts - the Steak Sandwich was the perfect mid clubnight snack). If you were lucky enough to know the bar staff you would get £1 "top shelf specials" which was a healthy shot of every spirit in sight!

The music policy was very different from the clubs in the surrounding area. It was very much soul orientated and with Simon Wright and Richie Roberts at the controls every Friday and Saturday ensuring each night was a top night!

As it was so difficult to get to you would not get the "riff raff", just the regulars and as such there was rarely any trouble which meant a great vibe.

I started going there when I was about 15/16, armed with my fake ID but once you were known with the doorstaff there was no problem getting in. It was the first club that I loved. I used to go week in week out, Friday and Saturday nights, for a good three years before Acid House took hold, I could drive and started to venture to pastures new. The place also gave me my DJ'ing debut. I used to be that annoying bastard that took my House records wanting the DJ's to play them. They ultimatey relented and they let me play mini-house sets during the night, clearing the dancefloor just for my mates to take over (no change there then).

It was also the place where I met my future wife!

Anybody that went there during these times (87-90/91) will remember it well. It was the golden age of this club before it unfortunately it lost its character during the mid-late 90's that ultimately led to its demise. It has now morphed into luxury flats!

Anyway, this is a really fair reflection of the sound at the time...

Got asked to warm up set for a good friend at one of his Heritage nights so I came out of up tempo retirement for old times sake. I always loved doing warm up sets as for me DJ'ing was (and still is) about playing music I love LOUD.

Originally, the set was only for an hour and the set didn't end as I wanted due to time contraints. When listening back to it recently I decided to revisit it and finish it off properly. Its quite 1991/92 centric with a few recent ones added in. The vibe and flow is pretty much how I would of played a warm up slot back then, except back then it would of been mixed. I only have one deck now and can't be arsed to mix on a controller, I will leave that to the current generation!

So What is it all about?

We want to stay as true to the Radio 4 concept as possible. We want you to share and play those personal 8 records in a cozy, lazy saturday afternoon bar setting to like minded people. Tracks that you cherish, mean a lot to you and that you can listen to over and over and over again, whatever genre, its up yo you!

The format on the day is something like this,

Things kick off at 12pm with an "album of the day". This will be a current / classic album and played in its entirety. Following this "Our Friends are Eclectic" will bring a chilled out lazy vibe before "Desert Island Discs" kicks off at 2pm until about 6-30pm with "Our Friends are Eclectic" bringing it all to a close for 8pm

We put on 5 “Castaways” per session. The Castaways will be a mix of DJ’s and Non DJ’s. What we are trying to achieve is that the music is as varied as possible and that everyone who wants to get involved will get to share thier 8, DJ or not...There is no disctintion here!

Anyway, this mix is an example of the afternoon vibe that we are trying to create ahead of the "castaways" sharing their treasured 8 Desert Island Discs.

I put this mix together to give a flavour of what we play when we support the bands for This Is Tmrw. We adapt our style to each band that plays, including the support bands, to create and keep a vibe before the main band comes on.

This is a fair reflection of what we do.

I can't give enough support to the guys at This is Tmrw. They are constantly bringing the best up and coming bands to Brum and I have put a fair few of the bands that they have promoted at The Hare and Hounds on this mix. In my opinion, they are the best promoters in Birmingham. I am not wearing rose tinted glasses, just let the bands that they have put on do the talking....
