I've been disturbed, upset, moved and uplifted in equal measure by the protests, activism, compassion and coming together that has happened in the wake of the killing of George Floyd almost a month ago. While politicians mutter platitudes and announce endless inquiries, commissions and reviews, little changes on the ground. Out in society. But when people mobilise and come together anything is possible. Entire police departments are disbanded. Instead of firing tear gas and rubber bullets into crowds, rows of riot police take the knee and confound the protesters they face. Instead of ending in violence, protests end in celebration. In song. And - Covid social distancing notwithstanding - with handshakes and hugs. This can be done, and the trite, pathetic ramblings of pumped up, egotistical politicians and their far-right supporters illuminated for all to see and dismiss.

So I'll let the singers of songs say it for me. Here is an hour and a bit of some of my favourite JA protest and freedom songs. One Love.]]>

Dub Vault raid this week. Special request due to popular demand! This is deep roots music. Underpinning the whole of roots reggae is this sound. Heartical. Sound system specials that you might have been lucky enough to have heard in the wee hours inna dance, and which I now humbly present to you. This is Dub-ism in its purest form.

While I was making this - in fact while I was playing the cut of "Burial" that is in this set - I received a phonecall telling me that one of my oldest and dearest mates has died. The Dub Pumpernickel has left the building. Unbelievable serendipity. This tune was a mutual favourite which we were amazed to find that we both had when we first met in the late 1970s. So this whole set is dedicated to his memory and the huge possé of mates who are now trying to come to terms with life without that gorgeous smile and infectious laugh. He always signed off "Yours In Riddim", so here you go. RIP.

Sound system specials that you might have been lucky enough to have heard in the wee hours inna dance, and which I now humbly present to you. This is Dub-ism in its purest form.

While I was making this - in fact while I was playing the cut of "Burial" that is in this set - I received a phonecall telling me that one of my oldest and dearest mates has died. The Dub Pumpernickel has left the building. Unbelievable serendipity. This tune was a mutual favourite which we were amazed to find that we both had when we first met in the late 1970s. So this whole set is dedicated to his memory and the huge possé of mates who are now trying to come to terms with life without that gorgeous smile and infectious laugh. He always signed off "Yours In Riddim", so here you go. RIP.

It's been an emotional one this year. My soul brother Ferd died late in August, and the musical connection since has been intense. I was recording the Burial rhythm by The Revolutionaries for Man In The Hills when the news came that he had passed. I was watching the streaming of his funeral, during which we had chosen to play Louie Louie by Toots and The Maytals as one of his favourite tunes, when the news of Toots' passing from Covid 19 flashed up on my screen. There's a short selection of Maytals niceness in this set. RIP Frederick Hibbert - what a joyous soul he was.

Looking through my record collection I am always astounded at just how many LP's, 12" and 7" singles bear the words "Produced by Bunny Lee". By all accounts he was both an astute businessman and a nice bloke - a rare combination in what is often a cut-throat world. It has been an absolute pleasure digging through my tunes to come up with this selection - there are so many others out there paying their own tributes, and this is not meant to be definitive. It's just me, spending the evening spinning a few old favourites and rediscovering some forgotten classics. Robbie Shakespeare was a total legend. Mr Bassie. Musician. Producer. Vocalist. Mentor. Together with drummer Sly Dunbar he strode the stages of the world bringing us epic basslines and the heaviest sounds we ever heard. There will neve be another like him, and I send my heartfelt condolences to everyone that knew and loved him. Especially to Sly, for whom I cannot imagine what life must be like without the brother in riddim he has lost. One Love.

A Studio One Special. Total respect to Clement Seymour Dodd and every musician and singer that recorded at his studio.

There is a piece of news within this set that is the reason for this. Big things are happening!

Studio One is the foundation of reggae music for me. I could listen to it for ever. Every one of these tunes sounds as fresh and vital to my ears today as when I fisrt heard them all those years ago. I so enjoyed making this one! 100% vinyl selections from the vaults at Little Rocket. Move the furniture aside, pour yourself a Red Stripe or a nice glass of rum, roll a fat one and enjoy a couple of hours of Jamaica's finest. What could be better?

Playing this one out live, with a new mixer. The FX send and return is novel, and there are a few howlers! It won't happen again guv!

A Studio One Special. Total respect to Clement Seymour Dodd and every musician and singer that recorded at his studio.

There is a piece of news within this set that is the reason for this. Big things are happening!

Studio One is the foundation of reggae music for me. I could listen to it for ever. Every one of these tunes sounds as fresh and vital to my ears today as when I fisrt heard them all those years ago. I so enjoyed making this one! 100% vinyl selections from the vaults at Little Rocket. Move the furniture aside, pour yourself a Red Stripe or a nice glass of rum, roll a fat one and enjoy a couple of hours of Jamaica's finest. What could be better?
