Lucy Claire is a London based composer originally from the North East of England compiles a selection music for The Composer Series. A mix of post-Classical, Alternative and music selected from her personal compositions.

Lucy trained at London’s Royal College of Music in composition and music for the moving image Lucy has collaborated with many filmmakers, choreographers and artists on projects as well as releasing solo work and performing live around London. Lucy is currently writing and recording her debut album for a release in Autumn 2015.

She released her debut EP ‘Suite’ in August 2013 on This Is It Forever records. It is music that takes you outside, into unfamiliar settings but with familiar sounds. The milieu of the world is present in the tracks, warm and comforting yet strange and haunting. It was received to much applause with The Quietus describing the release as ‘brilliant, delicately-wrought sketches’ and Dani Charlton of Amazing Radio naming her ‘Artist of the week’.

Her latest release ‘Collaborations No.1’ sees Lucy wrap her melancholy, spectral sound around the work of two collaborators – vocalist Alev Lenz and guitarist Bruised Skies. Reaching the ears of BBC6 DJ’s Mary Anne Hobbs and Tom Robinson, the lead track ‘Stille’ was playlisted with Robinson describing it as ‘extraordinary’ and a ‘really complex deep work’.

Claire takes recordings from the world, from the everyday hum of the city to expansive landscapes of the natural world to small every day sounds. Soundscapes are important in Claire’s work, but are often manipulated in a dark and lingering surreal ways.

A strangely Isolated Place Guest mix for SpacesFM: http://spacesfm.com/2013/03/a-strangely-isolated-place-spacesfm-guest-mix/

This mix has gone through so many edits but I finally landed on something i’m really happy with. It’s a little different from my usual mixes in its approach, as i’ve been a little more creative with the transitions and inclusions. The artists who are featured are overall, pretty well known so I tried to mix it up a little in terms of style and atmosphere to always keep the listener on the edge. Looking at the tracklist it’s quite easy to look over a mix like this as the inclusions are somewhat a little obvious in places, and so it ended up being a hall-of fame when it comes to many of my big influences, both old and new. Classics from Autechre, Loess and Aphex Twin sit alongside new emerging artists such as Heathered Pearls, Segue and of course 36 (who’s inclusion here is an exclusive preview of his upcoming Places Series track). But, If i had to point someone towards a mix that encompassed my favourite music styles today, this would be a good attempt at covering them all. Ambient, modern-classical, electronica, IDM, and dub-techno all feature and i just hope i’ve done them justice bringing them together like this.

01. Floex - Zorya Polunochnaya (ASIP looping edit) [Minority Records, 2011]
02. Biosphere - As The Sun Kissed The Horizon [Touch, 1997]
03. Alva Noto - Is Otto Roessler Right [Unseen Records, 2011]
04. Alva Noto - Xerox Monophaser II [Raster Norton, 2009]
05. Loess - Retinue [Toytronic, 2003]
06. Heathered Pearls - Ringing Temple (Decreased Version) [Ghostly, 2012]
07. Jon Hopkins - Abandon Window [Unseen Records, 2011]
08. Nils Frahm - More [Erased Tapes, 2011]
09. Autechre - Autriche [Warp Records, 1993]
10. AFX - Analogue Bubblebath [Mighty Force, 1991]
11. Segue - Parchment [Silent Season, 2013]

Ronnie_Minder - The_Composer
Ronnie Minder is a Swiss born, Australian based composer who started his music career over a decade ago. He signed his first record contract in 2001 for the single “Tha-P-Anthem” which established his name in electronic music. Shortly after release, he signed his second contract with Swiss music label Harem Records and his single ‘Listen To The Sound’ peaked at #1 in the Music Mail Distribution Charts (Germany) 2001.
More recently, Minder is shifting into film composition, winning a place on Peter Jackson’s composing books, while his work on ‘Letter to Annabelle’ is audible at film festivals around the world. What does his forthcoming EP release, Cinema Five, tells us about this new direction?

Overarchingly, the first thing to note about Minder’s work is its uncompromising production aesthetic, and in that department ‘Cinema Five’ doesn’t disappoint. Beautifully mastered, balanced and controlled, the overall EP recalls classical/electro artists like Craig Armstrong; using powerful crescendos and percussion hits to drive varying orchestral motifs through what are mostly short arrangements, the majority of the tracklistings wind up around the three minute mark.

That said, Minder crams plenty of emotion into these brief signatures. Some of the EP, perhaps ironically titled track, ‘The Best Is Yet To Come’ in particular, really illustrates how at times the most minimalist structures and melodies can best capture fleeting feelings and vistas.
This sparse, haunting track meanders gently across valleys or hills, conjuring soundscapes captured with little more than piano, strings and the occasional lead. It’s a melancholy soundtrack certainly, but by no means one which vexes or bores, as ill-advised ambient ventures can occasionally do. Here is something meditative and reflective certainly, but the arrangement retains enough sophistication to craft an enchanting tale during its 2:27.
Opposingly, ‘I Am The Law’ strikes a very different angle, kicking in with a dark arpeggiated pattern that sets the tone for a driving, compressed tune well adapted to climatic, heavy film moments. The use of midi instrumentation here recalls the globally loved Terminator soundtracks, probably due to the similar types of percussive rolls and hits, combined with an 80’s pattern to the main riff and incidentals. It’s hard to define exactly how, but there’s a sense of war, alienation and anger at work here, and it’s a strongly realised and compelling vision.
All of this leaves ‘How It Ends’ and ‘Apocalypto’. The former returns to Minder’s minimalism; simple, intertwining orchestration and cymbal washes let the melody do the work, with an arrangement that peaks cleverly around the 1:50 mark.

‘Apocalypto’ led me to ponder whether there might be something here to recall Mel Gibson’s recent cinematic piece. To be honest, this doesn’t definitively lead me in that direction, but there’s certainly plenty at play here that would be well suited to scoring any historical or epic film. The 2:40 entry of the tribal, female vocal sets up the last minute, taking an unexpected turn into more electronic territory that actually fits in well with the initial orchestral elements; perhaps the jungle samples here led to the titling of the piece.
So what’s there to say overall? Minder has come up with another solid, well realised and beautifully rendered technical EP here. It doesn’t bore, it’s purposeful and defined and each track has a strong sense of direction.

As ever, it’s nigh on impossible to judge how much of the orchestral work is sample based, compared with ‘real’ musicians. The EP does retain a definite electronic character and that’s to be welcomed. For a musician just getting to grips with this new direction, I reckon this is a strong EP. It’s intriguing and well placed, but this is a hugely crowded, tough marketplace to crack too. That being the case, there’s enough of a unique signature here to make Minder’s future cinematic work well worth investigation.

Tell us a little about yourself and what you do for a living?

My name is Ryo Ishido. After a venturesome vocational past, (I was working as a TV stage designer, spend a few years as special effects coordinator at the Bavaria Film Studios in Munich for movies such as Wolfgang Petersen’s / 20th Century Fox ” Enemy Mine”, and worked as a graphic designer for several game companies – Square Enix, Eidos & Nintendo and more) I’ve decided to cut it down a bit and become a composer for games.
But hey…. life has always something special on the plate for you…so after 2 scores for Xbox 360 arcade games, I slightly slipped into the sound library GUI scene. And now, as for a living, I’m designing user interfaces for companies such as Audiobro, Sample Logic, 8DIO, Sonokinetic, Cinesamples, Best Service/Eduardo Tarilonte, Open Labs and some, which I’m not allowed to talk about it yet in public. Besides this, I have finally got the chance to do the score for an upcoming TV documentary.

What is your niche or speciality, that makes you stand out from rest of the audio professionals?

Nothing…simply nothing. I just do “my thing”. If it stands out for someone…great. But I will never put me, myself and I over anyone else. I have a huge respect for any composer out there. Kudos.

Can you give us a brief summary of the equipment you use regularly?

Loads of stuff. Due to my work as an GUI designer for sample library companies, I get nearly everything for free, so this might be heaven…and hell…it is. Forgive me, if I do not name any company in particular. Oh, I can name one company, because I’m not working for them…Spectrasonics and their Omnisphere. Put me on Crusoes island…this is the one, I would pick.

What are your go-to plug-ins and software? (virtual instruments, audio processing etc.)

The one above mentioned….Omnisphere. And the one, that does a lot of damage as well as the other one, which is essential. (damn…I hate it, to be politically correct). I also use Illformed’s Glitch, as well as iZotope’s Stutter Edit a lot.

When do you find you are most creative?

I used to be a maniac during “night shifts”. Now I’m 51, so I’ll do my best around “normal working hours” but most of the time I do a long walk with my dog to reboot the system. Right after this, some magic could happen.

What is your usual process for creating audio content for games, films etc.?

Understanding. Trying to visualize the vision of my clients. Not showing off with ego skills. I’m simply trying to build a musical foundation to what is above it. Speaking of games…I’m perhaps building level design for the ears. Music should be supporting, not taking over it.

Are there any particular secrets to your creativity?

Focus…open your eyes and ears. Thinking outside of the box. Being myself, but also being inspired. Learning from fails. And respecting everyone.

Do you have any audio creation techniques that resulted in something interesting?

I’m an 80′s kid so I just love turning knobs, or how one would say today, soundshaping things. I’m also a big fan of creating tons of sound layers, just to remove most of them to the basics. Trying to tell a story, having highs and lows. Actually this is the most fun part for me after recording, looking for those parts and / or sounds which are telling the story and get rid of those that don’t. Less is more…true thing that is.

Any specific “lessons learned” on a project that you could share?

There is an “specific lesson learned” on every project I do. If not, this would be meant “creative stillstanding”. Every project is a constant curve upwards, if you are willing to see it…even if that curve includes tons of fails. You are growing up on them.

Any tips, hints or motivational speeches for the readers?

Be decent, moderate and kick some serious ass as well. Do not hunt down every Hans Zimmer score you might come along….be yourself.
<itunes:summary>Denovali Records is a Germany based independent music label founded in 2005. Not confined to a specific genre the label supports worldwide sound researchers. The program of Denovali Records varies from sometimes improvised darker experimental sounds, ambient, drone, indie and electronica to darkjazz, jazz or piano and string driven modern compositions.

Since 2007 the label curates and organizes a three days music festival called Denovali Swingfest. Focussed on experimental music the lineup offers a wonderful opportunity to discover a wide range of international denovali artists live and is rounded off by various renowned non-label guest artists.

Although a longtime fan of electronic music, it wasn’t until 2008 when Rick finally got involved in this wonderful art. Like most, Rick began mixing tracks in his bedroom until he was confident enough to begin posting his mixes. In 2009, Rick’s mixes caught the ear of Leigh Stone who ran a 4 hour mix session every Tuesday night on Kick106.co.uk. The rest is pretty much history. Since then, Rick has had several guest mixes air on stations such as Kick106.co.uk, Twistedenergy.co.uk, NSB Radio – Llupa’s Disc Breaks Show and Pure.FM just to name a few along with several live gigs in his home town of Dallas, Texas. The majority of Rick’s internet and guest mixes would be classified as deep, melodic, progressive breaks; however during his live shows, he tends to venture out into a more aggressive style exploring the darker side of breaks mixed with bits of electro and progressive dubstep, all dependent upon mood, atmosphere and occasion.

In November 2010, Rick picked up FL Studio and began to work on production. Over the next year, Rick was piecing together hardware and software for his home studio while constantly working on learning the ropes of production. Rick began to seek music/production lessons from Evan Arnett (The Emissary) and it was at this point in time through his lessons that everything finally began to make sense. The constant hard work and dedication paid off in March 2012 with his first release “Essence” which was picked up and signed by Mistiquemusic. Rick currently has new releases from Mistiquemusic, OLD SQL REC and Break Wind Productions which will hit stores in November and December of 2012.

2012 has proven to be a great year, but this is only the beginning as Rick has only just begun to get his feet wet…

It’s been a long time since I did one of these mixes. Finding time to compile them is no easy task but recently I found the time and the inspiration to sit down and create.

I often come across people who love to listening to the spaces mixes catalogue, they tell me how the music has brought them moments of peace and inspiration. I love the feedback. I decided to put together this latest mix as a friend began telling me how they listen to the spaces series as they cycle home from work through London. It helps them transition and wind down from a day full of challenges

In this mix of Ambient, Chillout, Cinematic Scores and Aoundscapes I have tried to represent the idea of transition, the changing of a season or the movement from one space into another and how in those moments we can find peace and stillness.
