This is proof that I was doing Radiophonic Workshop 'tributes' when most of the current crop of wannabe-Orams were still in short trousers, etc. Must not get miffed. Anyway, it's basically a big long scary-ish noise, as I had the very early work of the RW in mind rather than the '60s/'70s heyday. I cannot remember how I made it. It ended up getting edited severely and I had pop music producer Richard X read out some oft-quoted Francis Bacon words over it. No need for dancing shoes here.

I've recently found some rough mixes of a few of the tracks I did for the Tauchsieder 'Louder' album (still currently languishing in obscurity and available online for next to nothing if you have a look around) back in 2006. I do wonder sometimes if the album would have had a better reception if released today, rather than nearly a decade ago. Hmm. Oh well, too late now...

This one is named after my local television relay transmitter, which has been throwing UHF signals into the area since 1963. A permanent presence in my life, and I often drive up the mountain it stands on for a closer look. Sadly, you can't really get as near to it now as you could when I was a kid. Keen eared listeners might just notice some of the 1992 Classic FM test transmissions buried in the mix... The rhythm track is way too loud. Yes, I know. I can't do anything about that now.

Let's see how long this lasts before being pulled. This is a mix that I did for a friend's blog as a fundraiser, which I worked on at the same time as finishing the original version of RsH #7. Two deadlines in one month - that was fun. Anyway, it's a hour mix of 'dance music' from 1988 to 1998-ish. It's not the usual moronic 'back 2 da old skool' type MOS compilation mix, as I like to think it's got a lot more wit and invention than that. Also there are a few records in here which no 'self respecting' 'DJ' would ever 'drop' into 'a set', I'm sure. I don't care, personally. Anyway, it starts slow, gets faster, then much faster, then slows down again. The tracklisting doesn't tell the full story, as there are lots of twinkly bits dotted around. My favourite bit is the mix between 'Q' and 'I Want You'. Anyway, party on and all that...

Finitribe - 101 (Sonic Shuffle)
Bass-O-Matic - Fascinating Rhythm
Sub Sub - Jaggernath
The Prodigy - Poison
Bomb The Bass - Beat Dis (Freestyle Scratch)
DJ Mink - Hey Hey Can You Relate?
Renegade Soundwave - Biting My Nails
The 25th Of May - It's All Right
M.A.N.I.C - I'm Coming Hardcore
Chemical Bros - Chemical Beats
Beltram - Energy Flash
N-Joi - Malfunction
Digital Orgasm - Running Out Of Time
Mental Cube - Q
Carl Cox - I Want You
2 Bad Mice - Bombscare
Altern-8 - Evapor-8 (Bonus Beat)
Fatboy Slim - Song For Lindy
E-Lustrious - Dance No More
Eon - Basket Case (White Coat)
Pete The Lodger - Trace Sexual
CJ Bolland - Horsepower (Original)
Love Corporation - Lovers
St. Etienne - Speedwell

Same thing applies to the Pepe Deluxe remix - creaky old synths pressed into service, with a bit of bass guitar thrown in this time. I was quite pleased with this at the time. Someone else who did a remix of this track said on 'social media' that mine wasn't as good as theirs. I can't comment, as I didn't listen to whatever it was they did, and have no intention of ever doing so. So there. Think on, 'keyboard warriors'...

The other of two tracks recorded in 1994, during the only time I've ever been let loose with a proper studio setup in an attempt to make electronic dance music. I can't remember exactly what was used but I do recall a Yamaha DX, a Korg MonoPoly, an SH101, an Akai sampler and an Atari ST being involved somehow. There may be a DAT lurking of the results but all I have at the moment is a rough cassette copy, from which this is taken. Don't judge it too harshly, even though I do.

On August 31st 2013, starting at 12 noon, 24 hours worth of music and other sounds was broadcast over a small area of the Galloway Forest Park in south western Scotland, from an FM transmitter sited at Murray's Monument. The audio content had been sent in from all over the world, by everyone from established and well known artists (sometimes even properly famous ones) to children making noise in their bedrooms, and in all styles and genres.

The one uniting factor between all the 350+ pieces broadcast was that they had never been heard by the public before, and if the public wanted to hear them then they had to bring an FM radio to this remote and quiet area of the UK, and listen. Over 250 people did just that. After the broadcast ended, the files were deleted at our end. Much of the material will therefore most likely never be heard again...

The recording here was made onto a C60 using an early 1980s Sharp radio/cassette, which had been languishing in a garage for 15 years, and was powered by the cheapest batteries I could find. The fidelity is therefore mixed, and by the end of the recording it's virtually non-existent. These are only moments of a tiny fraction of the amount of material we broadcast, and the record/stop buttons were pressed at random when I happened to be near the machine. But as a record of the event, that all seems quite fitting. We have plans to do it again in 2014 and 2015. Details will be posted at http://thedarkoutside.tumblr.com/ as and when they emerge. Thanks to everyone who took part this year.

Ok, so a fairly straight Kraftwerk cover isn't the most interesting thing to do in 2013, I agree. However there is a good reason for it. Some friends of mine up in Scotland put on a night where people were playing 'werk tracks totally live, which was set up as a response to a similar event in Cardiff, which was set up as a 'consolation' to the 99.99999% of fans who didn't get tickets for the concerts at the Tate Modern earlier in 2013. Still with me? I'd hoped to be able to attend and play something, but it didn't happen. Therefore I decided to record a cover version to play out over the P.A. system instead. Perhaps as people were leaving... This is that cover version.

As the main ethos behind the performances was that they were to be done totally live, with no sequencing or backing tracks, all parts on this were recorded totally 'manually'. Given my ultra-rudimentary keyboard prodding skills, this was no mean feat. Anyway, I think it came out quite well. Those bored already will probably have stopped reading ages ago. Instruments used: Korg Monotribe, Korg Monotron Delay, Korg M500SP Micropreset, Moog Micromoog, Roland SH-2, Roland RS09 (filtered through SH-2), Commodore 64 running 'Software Automatic Mouth' speech synthesizer software. No external sequencer or computer based instrument control was employed, just the clock signal from the Monotribe into the SH-2 for the bassline trigger. Phew.

Note: this is nothing serious. Just me mucking about.

On a whim, I bought one of those Korg Monotribe things the other day, and in common with a lot of people, the first sequence of notes I put into it - that is, apart from a load of random guff - were those from 'On The Run' by Pink Floyd. OTR was originally done with an EMS Synthi AKS (although it says 'VCS3' on the LP sleeve, which isn't quite correct). An AKS is probably my dream electronic device, but currently they change hands for £5000 plus. The Monotribe was £150. Do you see where this is going?

So, taking the concept a little further, I decided to see how much of the original track I could attempt to replicate using it, over the course of an hour. It's in no way 'finished', and I doubt I'll do any more to it, it's just an experiment... * All the sounds (except the airport, the bloke running in that tunnel leading to the London museums and the guitar screaming noise) are from the Monotribe, with a little reverb and panning. Yes, I could be using my time in a much more constructive way. Sorry.

* - well, I fibbed. 06/12/12 - I've added the Roger The Hat speech into it, as it sounded a bit empty without it.

The work of one Andrew 'Andy' Bown, once a member of '60s heartthrobs The Herd, and future keyboard player for 'The Quo'. He was in a band called Judas Jump at the time of this track, and the sonic qualities of it are very similar to JJ's output, but it's better than anything on their only LP, IMHO (with the exception of the opening cut, perhaps).
Originally a snatch over 2 minutes long, I've somehow managed to almost double it's length (and stuck in a tiny bit of flanging, just for the hell of it). Original 7"s of this are normally well out of my price range, but if anyone's got one going spare...

See, I like Nik Kershaw a lot. I think he was, and still is, an incredibly good songwriter. Ok, perhaps some of his stuff has dated in the way that a lot of early-to-mid 1980s stuff has, but that's more to do with image (or perceived image) and the sounds/production used. Blame whoever invented the DX7. And 'The Riddle' got a bit annoying after a while perhaps. But no matter... isn't the '80s back in fashion now anyway? Or are we onto the '90s now? I can't keep up anymore.

Dancing Girls was the opening track on his first album, and I believe the first completed track from the sessions. It's very unlike the rest of the material, out and out electronic dance music, with analogue synths and Roland drum machines to the fore. Problem is, it's quite short in original form, and the 12" remixes were pretty dreadful, which was kinda par for the course with extended workouts of the period.

So, back in 2009 I took the 3 minute LP version, chopped it up into little bits and reconstructed it in the way I felt it should have been done in the first place. I know that a couple of well known and respected DJs 'dropped it' into sets at the time, so it can't be too bad.

Maybe I put too much of the vocal in for 'the dancefloor', but it's too late now, and I like the vocals. Anyway, here it is, should you care...</googleplay:description>
