It was early March when Bicep’s Matt McBriar realised 2020 would not be like previous years. “My partner’s sister and her husband moved in with us for a month while they were looking for a house. They both work for the NHS, so...”.

The rest, as they say, is history. And in the McBriar household, history moved fast.

“One day, we heard COVID-19 on the news for the first time and, within two weeks, we’d all lost our sense of smell and taste. I lost mine for a week – it was zero. Minus smell, even. Every dinner tasted like wallpaper paste. The only thing you could pick up was salt and texture. It made life miserable. Coffee was just hot bubbles. Beer was sparkly water.”

He pauses for a while, before switching back to his usual, and altogether more chipper, Belfast brogue, “I was lucky enough to feel ok throughout though, I was able to do loads of work round the house.”

McBriar and his bandmate Andy Ferguson are speaking to me on Zoom from their Old Street studio, and the familiar chemistry of the double act prevails throughout our long and rangy chat.

For the uninitiated, Matt is the taller of the two, although in certain press photos, this height differential is emphasised beyond all reason. This, coupled with dance music photography’s passion for making its subjects look Very Serious And Angry™, means a brisk Google Image search reveals several photo shoots depicting them like a mismatched duo of surly assassins; Matt, the loud one who rips peoples’ arms off; Andy, the quieter one, who does the accounts and discreetly tells Matt whose arms he should be ripping off next.

In reality, both are so blisteringly, bracingly friendly, you’re once again left to wonder why photographers are so keen on making DJs and producers look like nutters in the first place, and why other musicians seem to avoid the same treatment. Why is it that the programme for the BBC Proms seems happy to show off each tilted head and giga-watt grin of their soloists and sopranos, without ever forcing them to stare vacantly near pylons, or glare at the camera like they’ve just received a larger-than-expected gas bill?

Regardless, their webcam is giving me a reassuringly gnarly view of their production space in Islington, a long tunnel of synths and equipment that lumbers into the background, bathed in purple neon. With their backdrop of eerily-lit keyboard racks, I tell them they look like they’re filming an episode of VH1: Behind The Music on a submarine.

“It’s proper mid-90s Max Power Magazine lighting,” laughs Matt, “a real hard trance studio”.

The formative years of Bicep are by this point, a well-stretched ligament. After meeting as kids in Belfast, the pair formed a friendship based on mini-rugby, dance music and avoiding being beaten up at local funfairs. After briefly separating during their college years – Matt studying design, Andy chemical engineering - the pair collaborated on their now legendary blog, Feel My Bicep, which collated their favourite dusty Italo ballads and long-lost disco cuts, amassing hundreds of thousands of loyal fans, and spawning DJ gigs, edit and remix commissions and, eventually, interest from labels for their own productions. All of which culminated in an album with Ninja Tune in 2017: the self-titled Bicep LP which created a surge of popularity every bit as muscular as their eponymous forearm flexor.

That album’s mix of floor-ready bangers, uncommonly layered production and deep emotional heft charted a new course for the duo. Its monster lead single 'Glue' is a case in point, threaded with so much melancholic euphoria it seemed nostalgic for a place and time neither member of the group was actually present to witness first-hand. Joe Wilson’s masterly video seized on this, pairing the song with written testimonials of rave warriors from the Second Summer of Love, and becoming as iconic as the song itself in the process.

In an odd recursive twist, the past year has seen 'Glue' itself become a subject of nostalgia, as the comments sections for both Wilson’s video and its spine-tingling performance from their 2018 Printworks show, stand now as a litany of elegiac testimonies to much-missed, and much more recent, raving days.

“People project their own situation on to the music, and vice versa,” says Andy. “Like when people watch the 'Glue' video and say how much they’re craving 2019 again, when that video was made in 2017, about the 80s and 90s”.

90 minutes of spine-tingling euphoria from Bicep.

Every long-lived career in music is defined by a set of game-changing markers—you might call them "before and after moments." For Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson, AKA Bicep, the most significant of these took place on September 1st, 2017, when their self-titled debut album landed on Ninja Tune. Before its release, the Belfast duo were successful gigging DJs with a cult blog, a popular label and a handful of killer productions to their name—hits like "Just" and "Vision Of Love." The LP added two notable strings to their bow: a fresh suite of anthems ("Aura," "Orca," "Glue") and a festival-ready live show. Within a few weeks, Bicep went from DJing in sweaty nightclubs to performing their own music live at venues, festivals and concert halls all over the world.

Bicep's globetrotting tour reached a pinnacle in late November, when they headlined and sold out three nights at London's Printworks, an achievement that put them in a small group of live electronic acts capable of pulling such big crowds. On Friday, November 23rd, on one of their final shows of the run and their last live gig in London until 2020, we captured their performance from start to finish. Onstage, McBriar and Ferguson stood facing each other, their heads bowed in focus while their hands glided at speed across numerous bits of gear. The 90-minute video is a euphoric rush of melody, breakbeats and vocals, adorned with dozens of lasers and devoured by a 3000-strong audience.
<itunes:summary>90 minutes of spine-tingling euphoria from Bicep.

A profound departure from club beats and instead blending acoustic instruments and electronics with ease, it’s at once exuberant, smooth, expressive, profound and very well-crafted. A lot of blood and sweat went into the making of this album, as both Jam el Mar and Mark thought long and hard about the statement they wanted to make with this, their second album. As usual, everything musically was considered very carefully. The dance music scene was changing fast, so the last thing they wanted was to settle on a concept that followed a trend – best to react to what’s going on and set one yourself!

A new direction then but tonally of the same calibre. Yet another epic journey replete with abundant presence and brilliance. Admire and swim in the delicate opening number ‘Garden of Eden’ (Peter Weihe providing the beautiful solo), the housey and sprightly Plavka-led ‘Guiding Light’, the tongue-in-cheek ‘So Called Techno Track’ (a small retaliation there!), the Ibiza-style genius of “El Baile’ (with Peter Weihe again as well as vocals by Carlos Sanchez). ‘Warm Dead Dog’ is a foot-tapping favourite (originally titled by Mark ‘Mild Dead Dog’ to sound ‘scary’) as is the multi-dimensional ‘Suspicious Minds’ – perfect for any chillout lounge. Luxuriate in the drum’n’bass inspired ‘You’ve Got to Get in To Get Out’ (with three tempos all running at the same time in the middle), the James Bond like ‘Flame’ and the classic pop of ‘Kaleidoscope Skies’ (a worldwide hit penned by Plavka). Peter Weihe provides guitars again for the final two tracks – ‘I Pull My Gun Once’ and the album concludes with the (seemingly) simple but symphonic chords and melody motif in ‘I Pull my Gun Twice’ (my neighbours never liked me anyway!). The latter, which concludes the album, is almost Wagner-like and I’m sure I’m not alone in imagining this being performed by an full symphonic orchestra.

Layers upon gorgeous layers in every song results in an aural Shangri-la oozing sophistication. ‘Kaleidoscope’ is a stylistic combination of opposite poles that sent the duo into new territory, and away from the faithless masses. A truly enveloping sonic feast. Enjoy!

I actually had this CD before I had the first one. Some next level monging on this.

Whilst the first volume entertained a more dancefloor-oriented approach, ‘Tripomatic Fairytales 2002’ on the other hand is diametrically opposite and serves as an ideal counterpoint to the energy discharge of 2001. An innovative, chillout experimental wonderland of musical themes, sounds and voices, uplifting at times but in an otherworldly, alternative way. It’s at home at the Café del Mar; a psychedelic twist of pure sonic elixir, it became a perfect soundtrack for any kind of moment. Mark’s favourite of the two and featuring a selection of guest singers (some recorded live, others to already pre-recorded backing tracks), it redefined the ‘chillout’ genre. Listen to it and get lost in the dreamy concoction of sounds – a definitive key to unlocking the door to your imagination. Songs like ‘Ancient Dream’ and ‘v. Angel. Is Calling’ are with their poignancy juxtaposed with the marvellous ‘LSD Nikon’ and ‘Secret Kind of Love’ (turn the volume up to hear the multitude of telephone nuances in ‘v. Angel. Is Calling’). Weird drones and sound nuggets are massaged aside by graceful melodies. In a world where anything closely resembling ‘ambient music’ is too often bordering on non-descript and having very little to say, ‘Tripomatic Fairytales 2002’ sets itself apart, and in so doing sets Jam & Spoon apart from the crowd.

This opus spanning two volumes, released in 1994, and accompanied by the extraordinarily beautiful and original artwork by German designer KM7 is a landmark in dance music history. Every track on each volume is part of a whole, Listen to them both without interruption, and revel in the sound textures and beats that haven’t aged by even a minute – a true sign of a classic piece of work. <itunes:summary>These two albums took everyone by surprise - the depth and inanity of them both was not what we were expecting. I must have sampled various bits of these two loads of times.

The first volume (2001) encompasses a changing pulse of tracks, from the venerable ‘Stella’, through the trippy worlds of ‘Who Opened the Door to Nowhere’, the likes of the mind-bending ‘Earth Spirit’, the amazing ‘Path of Harmony’ to name but a few. ‘Right in the Night’ had some great remixes accompanying the main radio edit (and included an exceptional bonus ambient track called ‘Hispanos in Space)’). The main melodic hook to was based on Spanish classical composer Isaac Albéniz’s ‘Asturias (Leyenda)’ whilst the lyrics were written by Nosie Katzmann – an extremely talented and prolific composer/songwriter who would continue to work Jam & Spoon in later years, whilst at the same time enjoying success via other groups’ releases.

I found this in a record store in N. Wales back in '97
They didn't know who the band was, I overheard the staff arguing about it,
So I stepped in and said it's the KLF
So the boss of the store gave me a discount and charged me £3 for the CD
for naming the band
If only he knew how rare this item is
I fell off my chair when I found out how rare and how much
It's a bootleg. Always been a bootleg. Forever a bootleg. "Waiting" track is simply a rip of the stereo soundtrack to the "Waiting" KLF Video. Never saw any release on KLF Communications except on that video casette KLF VT007. Excellent job on the production of "Rights of Mu" track by DJ Echo... and that fine production does make it a really fantastic bootleg, but still a bootleg nevertheless. Not an official release and never was. There are some home made Cdrs which have been listed as "Unofficial promo releases" from 1990, but they didn't appear until twenty odd years later... go figure. I would suggest never paying for a cdr with some marker pen on it. You could make yourself a better one with a "Free Youtube Downloader" and a Sharpie Pen.
What a great and very rare album by one of the best dance duo's to bless our ears. I happened to go on ebay one day and some IDIOT was sell in' it for buy now for £3.00(he obviously didn't know how rare it was). Both of these epic track's are amazing. Waiting is like a fourty minute version of What Time Is Love's Virtual Reality mix, but the killer track is The Rites Of Mu. This brilliant ambient masterpiece with Charlie Sheen narrating a story(soundin' like Apocalypse Now)about a voyage goin' to a rave on The Lost Continent Of Mu is mindblowin'. If your lucky enough to get a copy of this, roll a herbal jazz cigarette stick your headphones on full wack and enjoy.

Chill Out is the third studio album by The KLF, released in February 1990 and one of the earliest ambient house concept albums. The music describes a mythical night-time journey to the U.S. Gulf Coast states beginning in Texas and ending in Louisiana.

Chill Out was conceived as a continuous piece of music, with original KLF music interwoven with samples from songs by Elvis Presley, Fleetwood Mac, Acker Bilk, Van Halen, 808 State and field recordings of Tuvan throat singers. Its best known track is "Wichita Lineman Was a Song I Once Heard".

Chill Out is a single continuous musical piece having many distinctive sections, each of which either segues into or introduces the next. The album as a whole is a progression, with percussion gradually introduced during the second half. The KLF have stated in interviews that the album was recorded in a 44-minute "live" take in their studio, Trancentral, located in the basement of The KLF member Jimmy Cauty's squat in Stockwell, South London.

The album has many recurring musical elements, which unify and merge the parts into the collective whole. Common characteristics of most parts include ethereal background synthesizers, the use of echo and pitch bend, samples of nature and transport, and the punctuation of soft synthesizer loops by sudden flourishes of harmonious sound. The Deep South is variously represented using original pedal steel contributions from Graham Lee and emotionally charged samples of US radio broadcasts: an evangelist's sermon, a range of samples of a very intense salesman, and, in "Madrugada Eterna", the detailed news report of a fatal road accident.

Despite the specific US settings, Chill Out is multi-ethnic, its journey taking in pastoral shepherds, Russian broadcasts, Tuvan throat singers ("Dream Time in Lake Jackson"), exotic birds, and an African-sounding original female vocal from The JAMs' 1987 (What the Fuck Is Going On?) that later became The KLF's "Justified and Ancient".

Elements of The KLF's "Pure Trance" singles "3 a.m. Eternal" and "Last Train to Trancentral" are brought to the fore during the second half of the album, progressing from the minimalist synths of the opening half.

Again, haunting melodies and memories of being so stoned we couldn't walk, never mind run away from cardboard cut-out alien greys in the bushes (Sam you twat! lol) - I love the way the throat singing is "grabbed" and turned into an entirely new, other-dimensional instrument - but the preacher gets a bit much!

Originating in the British rave scene, the vocal-dance sensationalism of The Shamen was evident while being feverishly pumped from the DJ booths of early techno pioneers. Finding critical acclaim among the substantive corps of dance culture, they released En-Tact, their first major-label offering. Crossing electronic currents, the tracks come off hard with trance beats, soul stylings, rap-attack incantations, vocal duels, and snarling tones. Relying on the wired sounds of drum machines and sequencers, the rhythmic pulses push sound systems to their limit. Even though there's plenty of material to keep your body moving, traces of ethereal-ambient influence keep things heady enough for the chill-out room as well. For whichever space or state you may find, expect lucid bases to be covered.

The saddest thing about this album is that it was re-released in later years, once the band had "found fame" with Mr C's inane babbling, re-recorded with him spouting crap all over what WAS a seminal album. Originally an indie band, The Shamen steered in a different direction, going more experimental and towards dance culture, but with some ambient overtones, I still now find certain themes or melodies reminding me of En-Tact, and that's why it's here. This is the original album :)

Having indulged in more explicitly ambient realms with the Amorphous Androgynous side project, FSOL returned to full action with Lifeforms, a double-disc effort that ranks as one of the best experimental techno releases of the '90s. If not as immediately memorable on a song per song basis as, say, Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works collections, as an overall piece, Lifeforms makes for an inventive, fascinating aural experience, as rich and detailed as the Orb's best work. Where FSOL differs from that band in particular is the comparative lack of overt humor and less immediate desire to make people groove -- this is something to listen to rather than necessarily dance to.

In comparison to Accelerator, this is an extremely subtle listen, with rhythms generally buried in the mix, serving the melodies rather than vice versa. In comparison to the upfront breaks and steady house beats just two years previous, here they're stuttered, echoed, often approaching dub in pace and impact.

Meanwhile, the space-alien bubbles and noises and haunting tones take to the fore, making for a disorienting, evocative experience, a mix of natural sounds and artificial elements much like the band's own artwork. Even the singles, "Cascade" and "Lifeforms," play down the beat. The one for "Cascade" is barely there, swooping samples and soft synth hooks to the fore, while "Lifeforms," for its comparatively more direct impact, relies as much on its keyboard swell and chiming melody as much as the complex overlay of rhythms. There are a few guest appearances here and there, but they're mostly notable for how the band incorporate them instead of letting them stand out -- Robert Fripp's guitar on "Flak," Talvin Singh's tablas on "Life Form Ends," and Toni Halliday from Curve doing a "vocal texture" on "Cerebral."

I originally edited this with the more chilled "Lifeforms" track, to fit on a Minidisc - to me, this is Future Classical music, and still sounds fresh even now, despite it being originally released in 1994. Amazingly experimental and utterly delightful, especially haunting in the winter months.

Perhaps Tomita at his most experimental, in which large sections of Prokofiev orchestral works are combined with loads of marvellous synthesizer effects.
One of the most lavish album packages released in the 1970's (especially the Japanese version), this hit the streets at the time of maximum gimmicry in package design. But it was great value compared with today's CD's (unless, again, you buy the Japanese version).

The UK edition came in at least three colours of vinyl: standard black, sea blue, and a bright pink colour. In Japan, the album had a full colour inner bag and colour sleeve insert. Even the interior of the sleeve was printed in colour, with photos.

There are a number of different versions of the titles on this recording. The ones listed below are from the Japanese CD release. The album was also subtitled 'A Musical Fantasy of Science Fiction'.

As with many of Tomita's albums, the pictures on early releases of 'The Bermuda Triangle' LP differed from those eventually released on CD - the LP version and a 12" single from the album had a sort of oceanic look to them with a kind of spectral image on top.

The computer encoded signals found on this album are in a format known as TARBEL. Using this system, messages may be encoded in a recording via audio signals. The TARBEL format was used as a way to save data onto an audio cassette recorder in the mid to late 1970s before the IBM PC and hard disk drives. The sound is familiar to anyone who has used an old tape interface (lots of 'piii's and 'gaaa's!) and can be decoded with a computer programmed to recognise the TARBEL system.
The first full-on trance event in Bradford for over 10 years lands this June!

Along with HarryHard (Friday Night Posse, Sountrack) & Mick Gledhill we have Galaxy105 legend Alex Pepper, if you were one of the millions that tuned in to his show back in the day you'll know what to expect! Plus special guest Tuffcub, seen DJing around London (notably at Riot!) he's bringing the tougher trance up north plus loads of exclusive mashups & remixes made especially for the night, (he also worked on both Clubland Smashed albums fully producing a CD on each edition on his own).
