SKOI SIRIUS
(Audiblebicycleday/Starbourne Productions, Seattle)

Skoi Sirius (born Shawn Lass) hails from the electronic underground with beats for the body, soul, and mind; his passion injects a cerebral element into the music that lifts his sets to a higher spiritual domain. Self-converted to the electronic side after a thick dose of jungle and drum & bass at the Ice House, an abandoned warehouse in Arizona in the early 00âs, he now walks the path of the underground, pushing boundaries with experimental music in whatever way he can. Representing his home of Seattle through the music collectives of his own audiblebicycleday and Michael Manahanâs Starborne Productions, Skoi spins potent and provocative IDM lathered breaks and downtempoish beats that take you on a stimulating aural voyage through several musical realms of being before bringing you back around again with a smile on your face and a groove in your brain. As of late, it is common to find Skoi layering many channels of ambiance and field recordings together, creating beautiful, yet sometimes haunting, pulses of sound.

I’d wanted to do a mix of Phish songs for a while, but was never really sure how as the band does this themselves every time they play, and much better than I could do DJing their live tracks; plus this could never be done as there is just too much awesome to choose from. There’s also a lot of songs the band just doesn’t really play as often in a live setting that I absolutely love that are on the chiller, more acoustic side of Phish. So in that thought process I thought, ‘Why not make a downtempo Phish mix?’

What you have here is just over 2 hours of Phish songs, solely from the LP’s and one EP – all studio recordings. I tried to fit something in from each one of the LP’s and sadly ‘Round Room’ just didn’t produce anything for me personally for this setting, even though we all know when played live those songs are incredible! The songs within were carefully chosen as my favorite beautiful, more melancholy, and softer sounding tracks; with a few oddballs in there to mix things up a bit. There is no jamming, no noodling, and no whale calls or signaling aliens here. This is the relaxed side of Phish. To me this is some of the of the most beautiful music the band has ever released, and so I’m celebrating it here.

Some of you will love this, some of you will loathe it – BUT for those of you who think Phish is only about the jams and the guitar masturbation, I urge you to check this out – I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how calm the band gets. You can even almost fall asleep to this!
Originally conceptualized around playing at Blooming Heart and wanting to make up a mix for all the lovely little ones being born to our family of friends the past few years, this is what ended up becoming a little labor of love. Due to the year and a half or so spent with this, gaps of time in which I worked on the mix happened, and therefore it seems to be in waves of movements. Smoke a fat one, crack a pint of something tasty, sit back, turn the volume up to a polite decibel level, and bask in the sounds of some incredible producers! Injoy.

This was all made and written in 2013:

So about a month ago I needed to take a break from this dubstep mix I’ve been working on for way too long…and for whatever reason, I decided to break it up with going into some hip-hop, which I’d been randomly listening to non-stop for a week or so. I proceeded to go through my entire library (all 2.5TB’s) and pick out a selection of tunes based around hip-hop in the sub-genres of gangster rap, R&B, underground hip-hop, trip-hop, glitch-hop, and head-hop (like Prefuse 73, etc.). By the time I was done going through all this music, I had something like 150+ tracks picked out – obviously way too many for a mix. Whatever, I decided to go for it anyways.

Through a complete process of randomly choosing tracks, I tossed a bunch together, finding as many seques from these albums as I could to add some comedy, and ended up with an almost 2.5hr mix. At that point, I decided that was enough. Anyways, if you enjoy rap/hip-hop, and the sub-genres that follow, you might get a kick out of this nonsense.

Sirius Sanuk’s ‘Thug In My Nug Vol. One” is able to be streamed here:
http://www.mixcloud.com/skoisirius/sirius-sanuks-thug-in-my-nug-volume-one/
Thanks again to Datachurch.com for hosting the mix, as Soundcloud’s annoying copyright protection algorithm banned this one from the get go!

Comprising of mainly ambiance with scattered ambient breaks throughout, this mix is the first mix available through me without vinyl being used!! Highly recommend this while chilling, going into a deep state of mind, or wherever you deem fit.

Reciprocital Matters was created using Ableton Live, an Olympus LS-10 field recorder, various samples, and a lot of staring at the MacDaddy screen. Hope you INjoy!!!
<itunes:summary>Nival Sapien Adoration was recorded January 1st, 2009 at the Ashworthian Pantheon, Seattle using a Pioneer 500, two Technics 1200’s, one Pioneer CDj 800-MK2, and one Technics SL-DZ1200. It was mixed within the walls of hibernation during the last days of 2008, and recorded on the first day of 2009. By sadly removing the gorgeous Sigur Ros song from the beginning of the mix, I was able to sneak it onto Soundcloud finally. I also remastered it to bump up and clean out the levels a bit.

It definitely covers ground as far as genres, but not nearly as wild and all over the place as other Skoicasts have been. I'm definitely going to start writing out tracklists for every session from now on, so that anyone paying attention can seek these songs out if they're digging them.
Big shoutout to PhammerTime for enjoying damn near the whole journey with me.

I have said this before, but this actually and officially be my favorite version of The Skoicast yet. In months of setting out on this particular sonic journey, I honestly didn't know what I was getting myself into. Over the month and something like twenty different editions of The Skoicast, I've realized that the purpose of the streams is two things:

- To do my best to introduce new music to ears that may have no heard it before.
- To someone find common ground between as many genre's of music as possible.

With this edition, I believe I have done both of those better than any other edition yet. Due to that, I finally wrote out a tracklist for this edition. This particular Skoicast starts in psych rock, moves through a few different shades of experimental rock, ends up in downtempo, modern classical, goes through a movement of IDM, finds it's way in drum&bass, and then jumps over the some hip-hop/rap, ending on a random emo note with Death Cab For Cutie.

I hope you enjoy.

Coming in piping hot after watching an archival show from Phish in 1989, this 5.5hr jaunt into electronica starts out with a dope ass jam from Goose for about 17mins, then starts diving deeper and deeper into the depths of heady electronica. Per usual, through hours of selections there are grooves that are hit, a moment of demonic church drum&bass, moments of bangers, and lots of moments of deep IDM. We end up somehow like usual with a few sludge metal selections, before coming to a classic noisy as FUCK ending from Alva Noto.

So over the years of collecting records and music media in general, I racked up quite the Wantlist on www.Discogs.com, somewhere in the vicinity of 5,436 items. Now that I've started offing my CD collection and a few records, I decided it was finally time to go through the Wantlist and delete and download what I don't actually need/want in the physical realm.

This Skoicast was just that. A journey with me as I go through the Wantlist and picked out songs from each release as I downloaded and deleted them from Discogs. All music heard was via YouTube links, and a ton of the music I had potentially never heard, and definitely not heard in years.

I believe the mezcal got ahold of me towards the end as there is definitely metal in there somewhere. Other than that it's a quite a nice journey through glorious electronica. Enjoy!
