<itunes:summary>About Skaarl:
Nottinghamshire-based electronic musician Skaarl, started out as a DJ playing house music, before following the usual route to producing music under various alter egos.
Now creating music in various electronic genres including chillout, downtempo, trip-hop, and house music.
In June 2013, Skaarl released his debut Tropical Haze EP, consisting of mostly electronic and downtempo tracks.
While this release serves as an introduction to his music, Skaarl’s individual musical style is best described as “whatever happens in the moment”, as he neglects to follow any particular genre tag.
After taking time away from releasing music, Skaarl reappeared in 2016 with his first album Locked in the System.
This was followed by several singles, as well as the Free Flowing Torrents EP.
2018 saw the release of his second album (following on from the first one) titled ’Slave To The System’.
In 2019, Skaarl continues releasing his own music, working with other artists, creating remixes for Juxta, Restless Natives, and Miss eFeMBy, as well as collaborating so far with winkandwoo on Daybreak.
He is a member of the EMA collective, Blocktronika, and has been part the ACR community for several years. </itunes:summary>

I recently did a guest mix for Miss Efemby’s show The Techno Diaries, where I was playing mostly tech house and techno tracks, so wanted to make something like the kind of tracks I was playing during that set (it’s more like the stuff I used to make under previous guises).

Made mostly using analog gear (mainly various Korg Volcas tbh), although the plucky synth sound that plays throughout most of the track was from one of Ableton’s synths, I created MIDI for the bassline and accidentally clicked on something in Live...it sounded good to me, so I used it anyway.

The title stems from a conversation I was having with someone, but she had a bit of a mental block and couldn’t remember a particular word, she was kind of looking at me saying “what’s that word?...what’s the word?”, so when I was playing around with the vocal samples, making them sound pretty unintelligible, that kind of became the title.

About Skaarl:

OK, so it’s technically 4:03 with the tail of the last beat, but I think this is as short as I can get an edit of the original vocal version 😁

About Skaarl:

Under a former identity, I was a DJ - playing and producing tech house and techno, I just thought I’d turn things around for old times sake and have another trip back into that genre (well not exactly, but sort of) hence the name of this track/release.

An alternative mix of Alter Ego, which is done in more of a tech house kind of vibe. Basically a re-arrangement of some of the original version, with a few additional elements thrown in there. The vocals were taken from the original Ultrabeat chops, and made a little bit more minimalistic, since I felt they were a bit over used in the original mix of this track.
Alter Ego is a two track single, released in March 2019.
About Tropical Haze EP
Originally the first EP I released back in 2013, this is a revised version officially released on 18 April 2019. I had always thought that it could have been produced a little bit better, and there was one track (Essence) that I wanted to include on the original but never made the cut at the time. One of the original tracks (The Burning Eye) I had wanted to improve on also, so the original version of this track has been replaced by a revised version. The other tracks have also all been remastered.

About This Track

Combining some elements of two other tracks -- ‘Tropical Night’ and ‘Haze’, this was the intro track for the Tropical Haze EP from 2013, revised and re-released in April 2019.

The EP was intended to be a collection of chilled out electronic tropical-rainforest-jungle type of tracks, which hopefully comes across to some extent.
About This Track

Electronic chillout track from the Tropical Haze EP.

If I remember correctly, I wasn’t entirely happy with the way that first part of this was arranged, I thought that there could`ve been a bit more progression in there.

I really had to use that flute though, loved the kind of haunting atmosphere it created.

About This Track

‘Flight of Icarus’ was my first attempt at creating ambient music a few years ago. At that time, I had wanted to experiment by creating something that resembles the flight of Icarus story, and also I hadn’t used Shepard tones in anything before, so these have been used here for ascent and descent during the flight.

The idea that I had for this story was as follows — After take off the ascending Shepard tone sees him take off into the blue, followed by some warmer baser tones for the moment when he gets too close to the sun, the wax (or whatever it was holding his wings together) melts, then the descending Shepard tone sees him plummet from the sky.

Hopefully this all makes some degree of sense 😄

‘Flight of Icarus’ is the 5th track on my Tropical Haze EP released back in 2013, although I have no idea how it relates to the other tracks really, at the time it just seemed like a good idea to add it on as part of that EP really.
About This Track

This electronic chillout track comes from my Tropical Haze EP. Parts of this, along with parts of the track ’Tropical Night’ formed another track called ’Tropical Haze’, which was where the title of the EP stems from.

I had wanted to do something that reminded me of the haze that’s sometimes around when being in tropical regions (kind of like what’s on the comer image). I thought the timbre of synths and the slurred vocal were quite a good fit for that.

The glitchy drums and delayed vocal stabs were intended to represent the random noises heard when you’re in that kind of environment (i.e. dripping water from transpiration of plants, creatures moving around in the undergrowth, etc., etc.). Hopefully this comes across to some degree.
Having produced this several years ago (February 2012 to be exact), I thought that this had been lost long ago. However, whilst looking for something completely unrelated on one of my hard drives, I stumbled across a folder containing 4 more or less complete projects, this one being amongst them.
The only changes made to this track really were a little bit of a change to the mastering (I even happened to save the premastering files for this too, as I was doing this process only using a computer at that point in time). Being a kind of legacy track, I didn’t wish to change this too much, but rather preserve it.
Originally this was just called ‘February’ (since it was created for something in February 2012 but never got used), I was going to keep that name and release it in August or something just to be ironic. The name was changed after one of those daft Discord conversations I was having with TygerTyger and Bufinjer at the time, and came up with ‘Leche de Ocelot’ after something that came up in a GIF, I said I was going to use that for a track name...and it sounds a bit more funky than ‘February’ ; )

About the Tropical Haze EP

Originally the first EP I released back in 2013, this is a revised version officially released on 18 April 2019. I had always thought that it could have been produced a little bit better, and there was one track (Essence) that I wanted to include on the original but never made the cut at the time. One of the original tracks (The Burning Eye) I had wanted to improve on also, so the original version of this track has been replaced by a revised version. The other tracks have also all been remastered.

About This Track

This is a track I was going to add to the original release of the EP, however it never made it onto it. It started out as a trip hop track that I had played bass on, not overly happy with my performance playing bass I decided to edit the bassline a little. Although with adding all the processing and manipulation I thought the weirdness sounded quite cool, so I continued doing this with some of the other elements of the track until it became what it is now.
About This Track

This is a track I made several years ago, and was never completely happy with, so I’m revising it. Part of the original version of the Tropical Haze EP, which is now being released as a revised version. The original track had a cheesy arp in it from a Korg PolySix, so I took that out and convinced Dave to record me a kind of acid jazz piano instead.

This track is for the main part a trip into synthesis for me. Each of the drum kit elements were created via synthesis (which is why there’s a bit of roominess going on), as well as the bass, chords, leads, sex, etc. The only samples taken from elsewhere were the vocals, which I just cut up and sequenced in Logic’s Ultrabeat.

This track is a collaboration between winkandwoo and myself. It contains my ‘On the Line’ track from the Free Flowing Torrents EP from 2016, which was reimagined by winkandwoo and transformed into a completely new track. The original can still be heard amongst the new elements, which include additional synth sounds, with winkandwoo’s cool vocals leading at the front of this.
Hopefully future collaboration will follow on from this.

This is a second version of ‘Afterdark [Teeth & Claws, Pt. 2]’ that I did, and to be honest it’s not that much different, I just really changed the balance of the mix slightly and shortened the excessive lead out from the original version.

This is the seventh track from Slave To The System, with the other version of this track featuring on the Vampire Bat single previously.

About the Parts of Teeth & Claws:
I had intended to remix the original version of ‘Teeth & Claws’, but got a bit distracted playing with one of those PPG synths and whatever drum machine it was (TR-505?), so it didn’t exactly go as I had expected and ended up sounding like this; the results were a similar, but created a completely different track. This track ended up being called `Afterdark`, which I subtitled as `Teeth & Claws Part 2` and was added to my Vampire Bat release (another one I should forget about).

Also while I was creating "Part 2", I tried bouncing down the track to test the levels out, however left some of the channels muted (or was it soloed?) omitting the drums and exposing the FX returns a little more, creating another more ambient variation on the concept. So there is also a “part 3” to this (one for the album as they say).

Juxta - I Fear The Robots (Dodgy Machinery Remix)

Since I’d previously done a few robotic type tracks, I decided to remix Juxta’s track ‘I Fear The Robots’…although technically this track isn’t about actual robots.

I kept many of the original elements of the track, including the vocals and a majority of the guitar parts. Layering up the dry version of the vocal with the wet version.

The guitar parts mainly follow the progression of the original stem, but this was trance gated in a fair few places to try to make it sound a bit more mechanical.

For this mix I had come up with two different basslines, one a that was amped up through an Orange AD200, the other was a rezzy more electronic bassline, after deliberating over which one I liked best, I just decided to layer the two together and use some modulation in various sections of the arrangement.

Drums in this were created from electronic and mechanical robotic sounding samples.

This is a remix of Juxta’s track ‘Peaceful Tranquillity’ that got dubbed up a little bit.

I wanted to keep some of the original elements of the mix, such as the vocals and some of the guitar parts. Although the dry version of the vocal was layered with the wet version, which I heavily effected to make it sound a bit swirly.

Parts of the guitar were used as the original stem, but sections have been altered with side chain gating, modulation and tape delay to create a more dubby sound.

I was going to record a new bassline for this on bass guitar, but I really liked those tones in the original, so just cut it up and re-arranged it.

The drums consist of industrial machinery sounds that I found quite appropriate for this particular mix.

I was working on a remix of Juxta’s track, and imported the wrong vocal into this track while I was going for a different remix of this. I liked how it sounded, so I just edited the vocal a bit to fit the track and did a mixdown.

Windswept was originally a track on the single ‘Shadows’ from 2014, however I recently released some edited versions of this track under the title of ‘Shadows - The Edits’. I had some ideas for further remixes of the tracks, although as mentioned above, this was the result of a bit of a happy accident.

The vocal track comes from ‘The Beautiful Ones’, which is one of the tracks on Juxta’s pretty cool album ‘Welcome To Your Life’.

Thanks to Juxta for giving permission to upload this track featuring his vocals.

Instrumentation, arrangement and production by Skaarl
Vocals written and performed by Juxta
Probably not, but putting out for distribution at least gets it on Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora and wherever else, as well as getting a UPC and IRSC. And like all the other ...Life tracks, I’ve just been putting them out for continuity purposes (or whatever that other word was that escapes me right now).

I'd originally envisioned it as a lo-fi type of remix, but that just made the ride cymbals sound like triangles and killed the lo-mids, so decided to go with whatever you would call this style of music.
