Listen & Digest Podcast 002 - GuestMix by S'celo 92Moods Mkhize (Impi Collectors Movement, PMB)

Here's a lil' interview with our guest selector/collector for the 2nd installment of our podcast series. A full tracklist for the tape also included...

Listen & Digest: Greetings brother. Welcome to Listen & Digest. Hope you dig the concept. Tell us how did you get into collecting?
S'celo Mkhize: Well I don't know whether this is also a form of collecting but I started out with a single cassette that I use to record my favourite tracks with whenever a song that I liked was playing on radio, that was in the Late 90's and early 00's and back then music wasn't as digital and easy to access like how it is now.

As time went on I was caught by compilations. Compilations were the thing back then, compilations from the Late Dj Mandla, Dj Monde etc.

L&D: What or who influenced you to collect the typa sounds you're into?
SM: Things changed around 2010 if I'm not mistaken. A close friend of mine introduced me to these abstract sounds, sounds which I've never heard off before and the passion grew on from there and there's still quite a long way to go. I'm still exploring and adapting to the many sounds that are out there.

L&D: What's your take on the culture of record collecting?
SM: It's amazing how the culture of record collecting is growing at a time of digitisation. The statistics show that there has been a sharp increase in the sales of records, however I've always maintained that one must find a balance since music formats are sort of seasonal. Who ever thought that cassettes will make a come back at this day and age?

L&D: Who are your favourite artists at the moment?
SM: Eish I always try to run away from this question lol! Dumza Maswana is currently at the top of my playlist at the moment. I really do like his sound. I've recently been checking the Mkizwana ensemble and Tumi Mogorosi. Also Siya Makuzeni is one of my likes. We'll that's me on a local front, internationally I've been checking Moonchild, the latest Josh Milan offering, latest Ladi6 offering and Tom Misch.

L&D: So you've prepared us an offering... tell us about it
SM: Well, it's a contemporary jazz blend of 80% local sounds and 20% international. Hope the Listen & Digest followers will enjoy
