Assignment: write a song about a holiday using free and open source software. Test driving my home-brewn computer program "bluegrass" for generating pattern-based music.
The home-brewn lyrics are somewhat on the edge of widely acceptable. Oh well.

For years I yearned for love love love,
a girl was what I need.
I dreamed for her to live with me,
I needed her with speed.

I built myself this snowgirl,
most gorgeous girl on earth,
't was on a Christmas morning,
that I arranged her birth.

[Yippee ya yo, yippee ya yay, this is the cowboy way.
Yippee ya yay, yippee ya yo, let's sing of ho ho ho]

I gave her quite a carrot,
some leeks to lace her shirt,
to underline her deep dark eyes,
I squirted in some dirt.

[Yippee ya yo, yippee ya yay, this is the cowboy way.
Yippee ya yay, yippee ya yo, let's sing of ho ho ho]

But as she stood outside alone,
I felt I missed her so,
I want her under my mistletoe,
and do the ho ho ho.

The Christmas spirit came to me,
and I made her come in,
She felt so cold, yet made me hot,
It felt like a sin,
but it was a win win.

Disaster struck when overnight,
the girl had disappeared,
she silently had left my bed,
and left it wet wet wet.

Yet never everything is lost,
and also in this case,
She left her carrot in my bed,
Together with the lace.

That moment when I realized,
the girl wasn't my thing.
I used the carrot otherwise,
and boy did joy it bring.

So here's a piece of good advice,
whenever you feel low,
go toss yourself a salad bar,
with carrot, leeks and snow.

[Yippee ya yo, yippee ya yay, this is the cowboy way.
Yippee ya yay, yippee ya yo, let's feel like wow wow wow]

This song, based on a somewhat creepy poem of Emily Dickinson is written in mode of binary internal symmetry (2)102. This heptatonic mode consists of the 7 notes C Db E F G Ab B. With the exception of a single note (can you find it :D ?), only these notes are used throughout the piece. The second stanza features harmonies made by stacking consecutive notes from this mode (in some inversion), lending the piano part an eerie sound. I've replaced the singing with a synthetic oboe, but if you feel like you could and want to sing this piece,
feel free to contact me for collaboration. More information about these modes of internal symmetry can be found on my blog: http://a-touch-of-music.blogspot.be/2014/03/olivier-messiaen-closer-look-at-his.html
I Died For Beauty

I died for beauty, but was scarce
Adjusted in the tomb,
When one who died for truth was lain
In an adjoining room.

He questioned softly why I failed?
"For beauty," I replied.
"And I for truth - the two are one;
We brethren are," he said.

And so, as kinsmen met a-night,
We talked between the rooms,
Until the moss had reached our lips,
And covered up our names.

I've written a simple scheduler in the programming language python and I've created some midi event generators, and combined both of those to drive the software synthesizer Yoshimi and the sampler engine LinuxSampler using the jack-midi protocol.

The midi events are generated based on a concept of randomness within constraints. The things you hear are randomly generated, but not in an "anything goes" manner.

Constraints are imposed to limit the disorder of the randomness. Just like harmony and counterpoint limit randomness in traditional composition, the constraints here limit randomness in the experimental composition. One could say that different constraints generate families of alternative music theories.

"Randomness within constraints" is a deep idea whose time has come. Nowadays it is extremely popular both in science (artificial intelligence) and art (abstract art) and indeed one of the basic mechanisms underlying the origin and evolution of life itself. I suspect that "randomness within constraints" is the barren wasteland where creativity and innovation hides. In this piece, I try to explore a number of different constraints. In some cases the constraints slowly evolve, in other cases they abruptly change.

Ton De Leeuw in a speech once distinguished between two kinds of music: "music that becomes" versus "music that is". "Music that becomes" is music that starts from a begin point and gradually evolves. "Music that is" is music that doesn't show any progression or evolution. Because the constraints I used are quite static (with some exceptions they don't gradually evolve as time progresses), I think this composition is closer to "music that is". Nevertheless, I hope that by combining different timbres and different constraints I have managed to keep the composition reasonably interesting to listen to.
Note: I do not consider "traditional music theory" (or rather: the different traditional music theory families) inferior or unnecessary (quite the contrary!), but in this piece I don't mind looking beyond its borders.

For this composition I programmed my own algorithmic composition system using Python, Rtmidi, Yoshimi and LinuxSampler with Sonatina Sound Fonts, but for a next algorithmic composition (if any ;) ) I would probably try to use the excellent supercollider environment instead.

The code is available here: https://github.com/shimpe/twenty-five-shades-of-random

According to wikipedia:

A Table canon is a retrograde and inverse canon meant to be placed on a table in between two musicians, who both read the same line of music in opposite directions. As both parts are included in each single line, a second line is not needed.

I thought there should be no reason to limit one musician to one line of music (or to limit one side of the table to one musician), so I created a table canon with two lines of music per musician (or two musicians per side of the table).

You hear three parts: part I is a 2-voice theme, part II is the same 2-voice theme upside-down, finally part III consists of part I playing simultaneously with part II. The actual piece consists of part III only. The rest is added for demonstration purposes. You will notice that the 2-voice themes sometimes sound a bit awkward. Compared to my previous musical constructions, it was harder to construct a theme that sounds reasonably interesting and reasonably well together with itself playing backwards and upside down in 4 voices.

I have published an article explaining the method I used to create this on my blog: http://a-touch-of-music.blogspot.be/2012/08/how-to-write-table-canon.html

A lot going on here. I'm taking a theme and giving it some basic fugal treatment. The counter-subjects are just the theme itself in canon. After a while, the piece gradually morphs into a second fugal part featuring a new theme, where again the countersubjects are the theme itself in canon. After that part is finished, both canon-fugas play together to form one big mega canon-fuga (sounds like the name for a menu at some hamburger restaurant to me :-) ) until they rest in peace in the final chord.

The piece is 95% automatically calculated from a C-Dm-F-G chord progression. The construction of the piece is completely explained in a blog post http://a-touch-of-music.blogspot.be/2012/07/explanation-about-technique-used-in.html .

Don't worry, J.S.Bach, while the piece sounds OK (to me!), you don't have to fear being out of work yet. (Oh, wait...)

A strict canon in five parts at the octave for string quartet and bassoon (synthesizer version).
Strict in this context means: all voices are exactly the same. I have used some jazzy harmonies
i.e. the canon is "wrong" according to the rules of the classical music theory, but I think the ear
cannot be wrong :p

This is the first result of an experiment to algorithmically construct "naturally-sounding" canons.

With the method I invented (or more likely: rediscovered ;-) ) creating a simple canon like this
takes only a few minutes... (YAY!)

You can get the score from my blog page:
The score can be found on my blog page: http://a-touch-of-music.blogspot.be/2012/07/canon-in-5.html
